*beep* movies like this

All i can say is that movies like this brings back all the terrible things that happened in history and this only deepens segregation. These kind of movies just deepens awkwardness between different skin color people and tells younger ones that we are not all the same. I am not trolling and i am not afraid to say to anyone ,,go *beep* yourself'' if that person (whatever skin color or believs he has) is being ahole. Anyway i hope this stupid segregation ends soon and we all will be able to communicate equally like we were made to do it.

The reality is, we need to be reminded of this history, because like it or not,our country WAS a slave nation for its first 300 years. All the fckd-up issues we have about race today are a legacy of slavery itself that's been handed down through generations like old clothes. How the hell can a movie deepen something that was already here in society to begin with? That's a silly thing to say. As a black person, I think this story needed to be told because people don't realize just how bad slavery was, so they needed to be reminded of just how fckd-up it was without holding back. And that's what 12 YEARS A SLAVE had the guts to do (mainly because it wasn't a Hollywood film, which made all the difference.) Yeah, it's an upsetting film, but we'll never be able to move forward with the present if we don't reconcile our issues with the past when it comes to race, plain and simple. And saying "fck movies like this" sure as heck isn't going to help deal with the problems, either. It's movies like this that,in fact, help us deal with it.

Amen! But those who forget history are deemed to repeat it.

This movie is a schcking reminder to a war of terror against black people. It's like the black people's holocaust.

Not sure I agree with that. I don't agree with everything in this film, but I do believe that films like this help all people to empathize with the plight of the slave class in the United States, from whom many modern African Americans descend. The damage done to that group cannot be undone quickly. It was likely so profound that even if modern society can guarantee equality under the law, the descendants of the American slaves may never be able to achieve equality of circumstance at a level commensurate with the many other races that inhabit this great land.

I don't think there is anything wrong with telling stories from this regrettable period of American History. No matter what your race, or your parentage, or your culture. Forced slavery is NOT RIGHT. It never was. It never will be. The ills of slavery, and their lasting effects, can never truly be set right. The best we can do is acknowledge that our history contains a very disgusting chapter (more than one actually), and strive to treat our fellow man with whatever respect and dignity they earn through their deeds and attitudes today.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Anybody who judges an individual they've just met, on their perceived connection to a group, is a fool. Take folks as you find them, no matter who they may seem to be at first glance. If you don't, you'll simply end up misjudging an awful lot of people, for better or for worse, and you may miss out on having a really wonderful person call you 'friend'. Keep your guard up, because Lord knows there are villains and predators in EVERY group. But don't judge based on the group. That makes you a fool.

Because you wanted change.

But at what cost to whom???

It is a credit to any society when it is able to deal with its own history, the good, the bad, and the ugly. American society is the better for its ability to present all those possibilities, allowing people to better understand themselves, and the world they inhabit.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.
