I was planning to watch this sometime this week and I wanted to know if the dubbing lives up to the subbed version. I usually prefer subs, but in some rare cases like Cowboy Bebop, I actually preferred the dub. It maybe helpful if people who watch either version plug in their views here.

So cannot say anything about the English dub, but I can say something about the Japanese.
I don't think it's that much better. I was very annoyed about the Japanese dubbing. Not really about the voice-acting or anything like that (as I don't understand Japanese), but for instant when the characters are clearly speaking German, it was still all dubbed into Japanese. I wouldn't have needed that as I was already reading the subtitles. The characters could have easily spoken German. In the whole film there weren't even that many lines in German that it'd be a problem to record them in the original language. Most of the characters that spoke German were in Germany so they wouldn't have to have Japanese voices anyway. And in sometimes the characters actually speak German (for instant singing a German language song or in a transition sentence before changing the dialogue back to all Japanese). And on those times the dialogue works very well. I do understand some German so I can say better opinion about German dialogue than about Japanese.
To me this was a problem as it took me away of watching a historical film to remind me that it's a fictional film.
All in all: If the English dubbing has those Germany parts with German language audio, I would definitely prefer that one. But as I have not seen it, I don't know if it has.

Really is not an eternal question - always subs. American dubbing of japanese animation is always terrible and childish, sounding cheap over acted voices like in a saturday morning cartoon
shareIn Holland we're used to subs, we smirk at anything dubbed. So I was stunned to see here there's a dubbed version. But then again, not surprised. It's a shame so many Americans can't appreciate films in their original, intended language. Because that's why they're dubbed.

They also take you out of the movies pace. Why Is It necessary for you to hear Japanese when the lips aren't even syncing to It? Seriously, It's just a mouth opening and shutting. The dub Is an exact match sonically to the Japanese audio track. I'm completely immersed In this listening to It In my native English. The dub Is awesome on this. The only complaint I have Is most of the sound effects are done via the human mouth. Very strange and not really a good match. I feel like they would be more appropriate In a primitive claymation instead of this Gibli masterpiece.

shareWhen it comes to Miyazaki movies, my guideline is subbed for movies that take place in clearly Japanese settings with Japanese characters, but dubbed for movies that take place in a Western or fantasy settings.
