I loved 'Breach' with Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillippe. Also, it's based on true story.

From what you asked I'd definitely suggest:

- Breach
- The Recruit
- Munich

Maybe also:

- Fair Game
- The Imitation Game

Once again, thanks to all contributors, we've got an excellent list here! :)

Cannot believe that nobody has mentioned the best spy film that I have ever seen.
Written by Le Carre, starring James Mason.
The Deadly Affair.
In my opinion the best spy movie of all time.

reply

Based on the novel "Call For The Dead".
Excellent movie, and book. :)

Well, a lot of people already mentioned The American, same director, same atmosphere, Clooney in one of his best roles, even if you're not a fan. Simple plot, beautiful cinematography, and super slow. I loved that one.

Also, you should definitely watch this movie with a very similar title as this one: A Most Violent Year, with Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. Not really a spy film, but very slow paced and though provoking. Oscar Isaac simple rocked the role. Very suspenseful, with crime/drama plot. Very interesting film as well.

Oh, just remembered another one: Kill the Messenger, with Jeremy Renner. Again slow paced, interesting - and true - story, the plot of a small newspaper journalist trying to uncover a drug trafficking operation, with a lot of people getting in his way. Another good film.

[after killing an Irish] Burn him, see if his ashes turn green - Bill the Butcher

The Quiet Amarican. The Dancer Upstairs

Was Caine in The Fourth Protocol too? Or did The Quiet American just come out around the same time (late 80's, early 90's)?

reply

Yes. Caine was in both and has starred in many spy films from the sixties onward. He is apparently an afficiando of the genre and often works to get himself cast in these productions of novels. :)

Excellent suggestions - The Dancer Upstairs is superb

Try John Huston's The Kremlin Letter in the same vein as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold from another member of the Intelligence Service, but American not British service. This one is a painter's (Huston) colors and features a huge cast of top notch actors amongst which Richard Boone, Bibi Andersson, Max von Sydow stand out.
Though the current DVD excludes two short but important scenes toward the climax of the file, it still preserves the look of the original superbly.

There is some spurious nonsense in the notes about the missing scenes in the DVD notes about only shown in Europe, but I can assure you the American prints were released with them.

Despite this, try this one but watch and listen closely as there's a lot of detail to sift through.

I believe this was the second major film after The Spy Who Came in from the Cold to debunk the slick glamour of the Bond films.

"The Little Drummer Girl" (also based on a LeCarree novel, movie close to the plot of the novel).

reply

I've always thought Le Carre reached his peak with "The Little Drummer Girl", however I found this production a little listless.
Sorry. :/
