It Follows - The Babadook - The Conjuring

I have a question.

Can you rank these films without giving spoilers?

I posted this question here because I didn't want to receive bias from any of these films' respective boards.

Thanks ahead of time...

Insidious was one of the worse films I've ever seen. If any of these three movies are anything like that one, I expect lameness entirely.

It's one of those movies that is a joke of a film. I watched Shadow People recently and it was clearly a cheaper effort in the production values regard, but it sure had the proper material to become a good film. Too bad some good director with a budget couldn't have tackled it instead. It had intriguing and even haunting elements; worth at least a watch.

All 3 are very good. The Babadook is probably my favorite of the three but no too intense. It Follows has the best soundtrack and probably the most well made. The Conjuring is extremely cliched but done to an awesome level. Can't really go wrong with any of these. Here are a few of my other favorites:

It Follows was a huge disappointment to me.
I didn't care much for The Babadook.
The Conjuring beats them both, I like that it was based on true events, and it spooked me.

It Follows - never seen [or even heard of]

The Babadook - crap. 4/10

Insidious - boring crap. 4/10

Sinister - good and scary. 8/10

Paranormal Activity - very scary, despite Micah being such a frigging douchenozzle. 9/10

The Conjuring - freaking brilliant and amazing and terrifying. 10/10

I like my Horror films boring. It's called minimalist Horror.

That's not the only kind of Horror I like, but with the minimalist approach, you at least decrease your chances of putting idiotic material in the film, and you increase your chances of creating a patient piece that pulls the viewer into the story whether the thing is scary or not (the story should be good first and foremost).

It Follows- This title did little to nothing for me. It only had one scene that I absolutely loved and then the rest of the movie did not live up to it. Which is sad as this scene happened pretty early on. The film itself feels displaced within it's own world and the soundtrack while a decent throw back was misused. The touch of synthesizer in older horror films worked nicely but It Follows made the mistake of beating the audience over the head with this in moments where it did not belong. There were moments where it was not meant to be suspenseful, just general character building and learning and here comes that track slid in for suspense that should just not be happening. When a young man is explaining a childhood crush we don't need to feel the same way we did when say Jason was chasing a victim. This is just an example but soundtrack while could be considered great it was just put in such horribly bad placement throughout.

The movie itself did not capture the sense of dread of this stalking creature, and many times I felt it was actually trying to be humorous. Which the more I thought on it I realized these situations were 100% Serious. Such as the creature breaking a window with a rock. When you see all the things it's able to do this seems beyond ridiculous. Then there is the naked man on the roof. It's never shown to fly so the assumption is it just climbed itself up there and decided to appear as this naked old man and watch them drive off.

In addition to this the opening scene to this movie feels like a completely different movie all together. A small short and then the actual "It Follows" comes on after. The ambiguity of which time period didn't really sit right, it felt like they were trying too hard to be artistic and not just letting it naturally flow. For example they showed old box TV's then a piece of tech that does not even exist to this day (the compact). So they were intentionally trying to get you to focus on these things which there was no real need for something like that to happen in this movie and it worked as more of a distraction than anything else.

It Follows just slowly fell apart for me as I watched it. I actually left the theater baffled at what was just shown to me.

Personally I'd put it as the last one to watch.

The Babadook- Now this movie was interesting, in fact I watched it twice to really get a feel for it. The first time I had a hard time focusing on what was happening because that child was beyond annoying. This was a distraction and possibly something they should have toned down a little to keep the main focus of the film. However as much as a distraction as that was upon second viewing I realized it all happened within reason.

There is an underlined tone in which this movie follows and flows well with, it keeps a consistency in it that is a breath of fresh air. The creature itself seems to get stronger without being prevalent throughout the movie. This one is hard to talk about without giving too much of it away because I will rant. Genuinely I enjoyed this movie and would recommend it.

Personally this would be the First one to watch.

The Conjuring- Now this is a mixed bag. It's a great haunted house feature, and it can provide some good chills and scares with atmosphere and the actual back story of what's happening. Let alone the backdrop or rather the location and the location itself explained. The problem it actually falls into is it does not do much to break away from that. It is a very interesting take on possession and what happens throughout. In fact the way it goes about the situations is a pretty fun ride. Let alone what happens with the other ghosts that are not the main antagonist.

The biggest pull in this is how much of a creep factor it actually has. Yes it has jump scares (which is why I stated it does not do much to pull away from the tropes) but there are very ominous moments as well where you feel something is going to happen but does not. The tension is built pretty nicely and the soundtrack plays around this well enough.

Personally I'd watch this one second.

So you would have a very good atmospheric Horror with Babdook, then the general Haunted house with some good additions with The Conjouring, and my lest favorite but well attempted tension horror with It Follows.

It may make the experience better all together.
