How did Ellis writing a book help a killer go free?

The cop says to Ellis "Your bad theories helped a killer go free."

How would someone writing a true crime novel affect anything?
By having the jury inadvertently read it or hear of it?

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

You're correct. That made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I read a lot of true crime. His book may have had enough evidence/info for reasonable doubt to be used for a retrial. I’ve watched a number of documentaries that have helped set free people said to be guilty
