Why was the junkie at a motel?

When we first see her she is leaving a motel with a suitcase.
I believe that was in the same city of her apt.
Did she return the previous night somewhere from a flight and was too tired to drive back to her apt.?
I doubt she was trying to get away from the manager and if she is too broke to pay rent, how can she afford a motel room?
