I'm not Iranian and also think this is the best movie I've seen in years.

Like others have said:

1) The complexity of the characters and their situations.

2) It's so tense, it feels like a thriller. And, as the poster above me said, we change opinions and emotions very often during the movie.

3) It entertains and invites reflections at the same time, and in a non-manipulative way, which is very rare.

I am American. I liked it.

My three reasons:

1.The 'gray'ness of the characters, morality- not just good vs. bad; everyone has some good and some bad. That's what being human is about.

2.Acting- everyone did very well

3.It told me that people are people (human), no matter what country/culture they belong to.

I'm Slovak and I liked the movie. It's well acted and the script is great as well. It's great to see movies from different parts of the world and there aren't many Iranian movies out there. The movie also deserves praise cause is very realistic.

Just got back from the theater. That sentence alone should tell you I'm American. ;) Best film I've seen in a while.

1. Acting. Not a false note in the whole film from principal to extra.

2. Pacing. Narry a lull or a rushed moment.

3. Truth. A reviewer of Raging Bull said they felt uncomfortable watching the film because they actually felt like they were voyeurs in to people's private lives. I almost felt the same watching this.

Outstanding achievement.

1. The acting. The scene where the father is bathing his Alzheimer's stricken father while crying is so powerful. But everyone else also brings something to the table, Nader, Termeh, everyone.

2. It starts out very simple, but then becomes a layered and rich legal/drama film that is never black and white. You don't really root for a side because both parties are sympathetic.

3. The ending. Such a cold and relentless ending that ranks among the best in ambiguity.

I'm American and only heard about this movie a few days ago. I just watched it and gave it a 10/10. This is easily the best movie of the year and will probably win the Oscar tomorrow. I also think it should have been nominated for Best picture (not just foreign picture). This movie is relatable to anyone (not just Iranians) or even married people.

It reminds me of Kramer vs. Kramer which is also about separation and divorce and the feelings that go with it. Of course, this movie goes much further with immigration and legal issues, and has a strong script (plot + dialogue) and a fantastic ending that sums up the whole movie.

Anyways, I agree with most of the comments here and would say my top 3 reasons for rating it so highly are:

1. Acting
2. Story
3. Ending

I only saw this movie about a week ago, and thought it was excellent. I'm British. I gave it 9/10 here on IMdb. My 3 reasons?...

1) Superb acting
2) Great script
3) Treats viewers with intelligence

I loved it.

1. It all deals with circumstance, with fate, and with what is really right and wrong

2. The acting is incredible

3. I could sympathize with the characters, even though I wasn't really sure I liked them. Especially the servant. I could understand why she was willing to do what she was doing. And I could sympathize with her utter fear of doing the wrong thing, even while she was doing it.

About more than 40 non iranian film festivals (including oscars, berlinale and golden globes) liked it.
