Jessica Chastain

I am watching this movie again, there is nothing else on TV. And I'm asking myself, again, why on earth did Jessica Chastain get an Oscar nomination for this? She is very monotone, little emotion showed, boring. Her character was an uninteresting analyst.

Just don't get it.

I think she was good enough and was seen as a rising star at the time.

Its that man again!!

Except of course for her outrageously overacted big screaming and yelling 'Oscar" scene. This is the type that typically gets shown on talk shows so that people who don't know much about 'subtle' acting or nuance will think this is great acting.
When I saw the movie in the theater I was very tempted to yell back at the screen to tell her to shut the @^%$ up or at least for the actor playing against her to slap her one. Of course, that's not going to happen when you have a woman mouthing off like that being directed by one of her own.

Lol gittes me too. I loved her performance all throughout. It was very much a new interpretation of Clarice Starling and Jodie Foster's brilliant, subtle work in Silence of the Lambs. I too was only irritated by her screaming tantrum scene that could have worked if she just toned it down a little.

reply

thanks EJverth: She should have toned it A LOT (Btw- like the word tantrum used here)

I agree. She was fine but certainly didn't tower over the competition.
My least favorite scene was the overacting orgy in which she shrieks and shakes and screams at Kyle Chandler's character. Jesus. I'm surprised there was any scenery left on the set at all.

reply

Agree. i thought she was extremely dull.

Get on the scale son! Get off the scale.

Right there with ya. Only movie i kinda liked her in was Crimson Peak. She was just downright annoying in this. If you take her out of the movie, it's great. Edgerton, Pratt and Clarke were awesome. I smiled when I saw Gandolfini.

I like her and I think she's a good actress, especially in "The Help", "Lawless", "A Most Violent Year", and "Take Shelter". That said, I think she did a decent job in this movie, but definitely not Oscar worthy. Also, the over acting with her station chief and the use of foul language were so unnecessary. What's with "I'm the *beep* who found this house"? No one at the CIA (or any government agency) would dare to talk in that tone of voice with that obscene lexicon to one's boss, let alone one's boss's boss. Very unnecessary, unbelievable, and uncalled for dialogue. And how about that rant with the station chief... and that "I don't '*beep*'..." bit at the restaurant...? I believe her character can be tough and act tough or showing determination with more credibility and believable without the use of foul language and the ranting/threatening scene.

I didn't find her character all that interesting and don't think she was given all that much to do until the final act, where she finally got to show some range. Jason Clarke and Jennifer Ehle impressed me more in the film.

I can’t stop looking at her fish lips. Very distracting.
