Were Ed and Nicole gay/bi in the original book or was that just added in the TV series to be "woke"?

I read the book twice. There was no gay character, nor characters.

Oh man - they really want to ram that down our throats don't they (pun intended)
I hate woke hidden agendas. Not even hidden anymore.
