I could never really tell how sincere Sutter was being. I never questioned Aimee's love for him but I found myself doubting Sutter. He seems to just nod and go along with what she's saying most of the time while Aimee is the one who shows genuine love. Sutter's attitude seems to always be more laid back and passive in a way.
So did he really love her? Did he love her like she clearly loved him?
I think he did love cuz if you read the books it says when he realizes he is actually in love with her. So I think that he falls for her during spending time and getting to know her. At the accident scene I could see it in his eyes how much he cared for her also in one of the deleted scenes it's shown how much he cares for.

Can anybody living in the now ever love someone? Sutter spent so much time numbing his feelings with alcohol that it would have killed any true feelings of love. I think the film makes clear he had the capacity to feel love if he ever got his act together, but because of his drinking Aimee would never be the person he loved.
