this will bomb big time

will ferrel is hilarious and usually hits the mark in most of his movies but this movie is a bad idea
when ur reading constant subtitles ur not watching the movie properly so ur missin so much of the funny face gestures etc
i know they thought it would be a different concept and it might work but i seriously think this will stink
the trailer is so dull
i hope im wrong but doubt it

reply

I completley agree Subtitles in a comedy seems to make no sense since half of comedy is delivery. It seems like a better SNL sketch than a whole movie.

Part of the humor is the subtitles, don't you see? The Yanqui is being cut down to size in this new American cinema, forced to speak Spanish and operate on Mexican terms. When have you seen that before? The whole concept is a radical inversion.

reply

[deleted]

Man are you showing ignorance because me and my mother loved it and she is Mexican.

reply

So how do you think people in other countries watch comedies? So in non- english speaking countries we are unable to understand comedies because reading subtitles makes it hard to follow the story? Don`t expect everybody to be as dumb as you.

I believe in me. I'm a little screwed up but I'm beautiful.

reply

this movie will be a big success because it has universal appeal. this is the kind of comedy that everyone comes out to see, no matter the class or culture.

reply

Germany and France dub over English films into their languages and I think thats stupid. I can read subtitles, and I watch a lot of foreign movies so I'll be fine. I just hope its funny and not a failed effort.

Hollywood keeps remaking foreign movies because of people like you.

This!

reply

Every country does remakes. And remakes are good. If the remake is a good movie or show the viewer and makers win and the original gets good press. If the remake is bad then people who might have never heard of it might get curious enough to see the original. Plus the people who own the rights to the original get money for their idea. Every time I hear people complain about remakes I can't help but feel that they are pathetic, one of those people who only like a band till it gets popular. I myself have seen more foreign film and movies than anyone I know, if I like the original I check out the remake and hope they changed it up. I like to see a different directors viewpoint on the subject matter.

Fact: 87.3% of IMDB users belong to the secret society of cynics.

reply

''If the remake is a good movie''

But that's the thing, remakes are hardly ever good, let alone better than the original. Mostly becauses remakes are almost always dumbed down versions of the originals, to have a wider appeal. Pointless, dumbed down, average movies made only for the cash. I can count the amount of good remakes on one hand (you know, remakes done by directors who actually care about the source material, and care about making quality movies).

''Every time I hear people complain about remakes I can't help but feel that they are pathetic, one of those people who only like a band till it gets popular.''

Except that movie remakes don't affect the originals. I don't stop liking movies just because they've been remade.

"Every country does remakes."

Not that much countries. Not that much remakes.

"And remakes are good."

Not all remakes are good. If you think that... it means that you lack objetivity.

"If the remake is a good movie or show the viewer and makers win and the original gets good press."

Usually the original has good press before a remake comes out. That's the main reason to do a remake.

"If the remake is bad then people who might have never heard of it might get curious enough to see the original."

They simply won't watch the remake or the original or... never care about the original because of a lame remake.

"the people who own the rights to the original get money for their idea."

Wrong! Almost every creator in the movie biz don't own the rights to their idea.

"Every time I hear people complain about remakes I can't help but feel that they are pathetic"

You seem quite pathetic defending remakes just to defend remakes.

"I myself have seen more foreign film and movies than anyone I know"

Well... you are not alone. And sure some have seen more.

"if I like the original I check out the remake and hope they changed it up."

Well... I tend to check the remake too. I'm happy if the remake is a good movie. I don't care about the changes or lack of.

"I like to see a different directors viewpoint on the subject matter. "

There's not need of a remake to see different directors talking on the same subject.

"Fact: 87.3% of IMDB users belong to the secret society of cynics."

...I guess 95% don't like movies... just like the bizness.

reply

My *favourite* remake ever was Death At A Funeral.
I mean seriously, the movie was already in English and yet, Chris Rock remade it with an all black cast BUT with the same midget lol WWHHHYYY
The original film was brilliant but I couldn't sit through the dumbed down American version

reply

I have to read, I'll miss the funny faces waaaaaaahhh.

I don't agree OP. I think the film has great potential. Comedy isn't as limited as you make out.

Passion of the Christ did ok.

reply

And the comedy was fast and furious in the Passion of the Christ... .

reply

Sure was... Christian grindhouse at its finest... I laughed uproariously through the whole thing!

reply

WIN!

reply

Don't you think you're offending people with that absurd comment?

reply

Offending who? Christians? Who cares?

reply

Christians do.

reply

Christians do ässhole. I don't care if I offend you though.

reply

I don't think you've got what it takes to offend me.

I guess you've never seen the OSS 117 movies. They're two of the funniest films I've seen in the past five years and guess what!? They are subtitled!

If you can't read and watch a film at the same time you shouldn't ever drive a vehicle.

reply

Do you speak American?

To the OP, I dont care if this movie bombs ... it will rock! It will be funny - and not just by looks! :P

And Introducing Will Feeeeeeeraaaaaaal!

reply

If the violence is done well and Will Feeeeraaaaal can keep his strict face delivering his lines it will be fun.
Will there be boobs in there?

If subtitles ruin a movie experience for you, then you must have the IQ of a 5 year old.

reply

The reason foreign language movies aren't as funny as English language movies is because people in different places think different things are funny. The target audience for this movie are Americans. Since young people, who spend so much money at the box office aren't going to see it being it's rated R and most likely wouldn't want to see it since it's subtitled it most likely won't do as well as some other movies, R rated comedies never do, I guess we will have to wait and see if that has anything to do with the subtitles too.

reply

well glad i got u guys all talkin and thanks for the put downs glad to see the kids are on form lol
its all about opinions guys and as i say the trailer stinks and i think its going to be wills weakest film to date but lets all chat again in feb when its released and see how we feel then

reply

This movie seems aimed at Mexicans and Americans...if you think Mexicans and Americans and Mexican-Americans think different things are funny I think you're projecting too much exoticness on "the other"...people in different places speak different languages, they don't really - provided they're from the same hemisphere at least - think awfully different things are funny...I grew up speaking Spanish and English and the humor is not astoundingly different....as an adult I learned French, french funny things are still funny to me

reply

Wow lots of angry people I speak spanish so I'm not worried about subtitles, I won't have to read them, this post was about this movie is going to bomb and the majority of people in America will not want to see a comedy in subtitles. That and Will Ferrell really hasn't had a succesfull movie in a while so you really think his Spanish comedy will be a hit.

P.S. I'm a Will Ferrell fan.

reply

seem like the whole Joke is Will Ferrel speaking Spanish overly dramanticly

Americans...the whole world watches movies with subtitles, it ain´t that hard, even children of 8 years old can do it, but as usual you belive that US is the whole world, for me it´s way more annoying when in a film Mexicans, Frenchs, Germans and Turkishs they all speak in english, that is just dumb (And just beacuse you are to lazy to read subtitles).

About the film, it looks very stupid, and Will Ferrel dosen´t have a single hair of mexican and surley dosen´t sounds like a mexican he just sounds like a gringo trying to sound like mexican.

OMG i´ve seen an alien and no one belives me

reply

Yea thats the joke of the movie. Why do you think in the preview it says all the Mexican actors first and then introducing Will Ferrell, it's all part of the joke.

reply

people like you are just as annoying and helping dumb down society when you make those same worn-out sweeping insults saying an entire country is too lazy to read subtitles. at least he wasn't condescending to anyone and their entire country in the process.

read the replies to him. almost every other post mentions Will Ferrel not fitting the part is the whole point. apparently you're lazy and need some things dumbed down for you as well.

reply

Lobby you misunderstood just about everything that I said. I was in no way shape or form saying ANYTHING about Mexicans, Americans or Mexican-Americans. All I said is that there are different stands of humor in different places. Case in point the UK vs the US. So much of their humor is really really dry while in the US it's not. Watch an episode of the UK Office and the the US version and you will see exactly what I mean. Most of the eastern European comedies I've seen have been tragically funny etc. If you add subtitles on top then it might not translate. But the point is that with or without subtitles this is made for an American Audience. It doesn't make a person xenophobic to admit that people in different cultures will respond to things differently, even if talking about different westernize people.

reply

You're (Not ur) forgetting that some of the subtitles will probably work with the facial expressions. Either way I'm waiting to actually see the movie before making any calls
