So very, very white

The National Lampoon featured so much humor that skewered ingrained and institutional racism, yet it had the whitest possible staff and contributors. This documentary is good, but so, so very white. How could they have not had any diversity of content creators when dealing with such hot-button topics?

It was a product of its time. Not only was it WHITE, but middle-class, arrested development, frat boy-centric. The copious boobs and juvenile sex inside the magazine covers proves that. That said, it pushed all the boundaries that needed pushing. And when the alt-right complain about liberal political correctness, I like to remind them that the politically incorrect was a leftist invention. The Ted Kennedy/VW "ad" is genius.

There's been a switch. The left today would be horrified by this magazine.

I saw no people of color in that movie or cast list. From the time it started, it came from the Harvard Lampoon...also very, very white. I hadn't read the National in years, although I subscribed for years at its beginning. If it changed in the later years, I don't know. Again, just a sign of the times.

Maybe Harvard was very white in the 70s? If they were still around they would parody Wokies like you!

Thomas Carney, writing in New Times, traced the history and style of the National Lampoon and the impact it had on comedy's new wave. "The National Lampoon," Carney wrote, "was the first full-blown appearance of non-Jewish humor in years—not anti-Semitic, just non-Jewish. Its roots were W.A.S.P. and Irish Catholic, with a weird strain of Canadian detachment. . . . This was not Jewish street-smart humor as a defense mechanism; this was slash-and-burn stuff that alternated in pitch but moved very much on the offensive. It was always disrespect everything, mostly yourself, a sort of reverse deism."
