If this was how Marilyn actually was like...

...then I don't really get all the hype for her. She seemed like a very self-absorbed, dramatic person who only used people in order to make her feel special. I also think she's not a really good actress and hated how try-hard she seemed with the whole giggly thing she had going on and that annoying breathy, baby talk. I can't believe those men ate that stuff up.

What are we supposed to like about Marilyn?

Besides the more obvious features, how about the whole giggly thing she had going on and that breathy baby talk?

Water polo? Isn't that terribly dangerous? - I'll say. I had two ponies drown under me.

I guess nothing then. Thank you for that discussion.

She was never hired for her acting, she was hired for her looks. You might not see it but a lot of other people do. I'm a woman as well and I personally thought she was stunning! Who could blame men for going crazy over her.

She was never hired for her acting, she was hired for her looks.

That's harsh. Have you never seen The Misfits?

reply

Most actors are self absorbed and dramatic. In fact, most people are self absorbed and narcissistic. Maybe not on a sociopathic level, but we're all guilty of such traits.

Further, this movie is just that - a movie. It's not a documentary and most MM fans think it's a load of bunk. If you're looking to a piece of fiction to clue you in about a woman who has been dead for 50+ years, you'll be disappointed. Very few biopics are accurate and they get less accurate when told from the point of view of someone who likely only had a passing knowledge of the subject.

And why should you like Marilyn? Who said you had to? If you have to try, she might not be your cup of tea. I don't understand the appeal of Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift but then I'm probably not in their demographic. It doesn't make them any less relevant and I don't seek out their fans to ask then why they like them. Maybe it's because I'm only slightly narcissistic and am all too aware that it's ok if other people don't share each and every one of my likes and dislikes.

She was a beautiful, curvaceous blonde who exuded raw sexuality in a way that few women of that time did. Of course today most people wouldn't find the giggling ditzy blonde persona very attractive but remember, at the time all that simply translated into a free-spirited, carefree little sex doll. And yes, men ate it up. Hell, I'm a 22 year old straight woman but the first film I saw Marilyn act in was Niagara and I fell instantly in love.

reply

Omg, Marilyn was breathtaking in Niagara. I watched that film recently because I'm a fan of Cotten who played her husband.

reply

you are so right. also, its quite common for people to become famous for no reason, the early death doesnt hurt

reply

More to the point, what you are watching in this movie is not MARILYN but some second-rate actress - who isn't good enough to be a modern A-list sex symbol superstar in her own right - PRETENDING to be Marilyn ... and failing.

If you want to see why Marilyn was so popular, forget watching a movie about someone else pretending to be Marilyn acting, and go watch an actual Marilyn Monroe film instead. I would suggest either "Some Like It Hot", "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" or "How To Marry A Millionaire".

Then, after you have watched the genuine Marilyn as she really appeared in the films that made her a star, come back and tell us what you think.

reply

Why can't people like you ever have polite discussions without trying too hard to be so insulting?

reply

He/she wasn’t being insulting. The poster had a point - just watch a Marilyn Monroe film so you can gain a perspective you can’t get from watching an actress play her. I didn’t see any insults here.

reply

Get a few of her movies starting with her small part in Asphalt Jungle, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, a few others like that, and end with Some Like It Hot...then think your question over again.

reply

If anybody wants to see how great of an actress Marilyn can be go watch her very underrated film Don't Bother To Knock.

reply

Don't Bother to Knock?? How about Niagara? her greatest dramatic role

Boston and Philly love to slander us, but they don't have as many fans as us

reply

I saw Niagara a few years ago.

reply

She acts like that all the time in her movies though, which kind of makes her a one-trick pony. Who's the not so bright one now? My point of her not being a very good actress still stands.

If I can't have you, I don't want nobody baby...

reply

I agree. She wasn't a very good actress.

reply

Because it was hard for her to get different roles. She wanted to be a serious actress, but her looks only got her a certain type of role. That's why she had that huge thing with Fox and eventually left Fox (but they ended up wanting her back). At least know something before making assumptions. Obviously you know nothing about Marilyn.

reply

I'm sorry for her that she wanted to be a 'serious actress'so much that she couldn't just enjoy the comedic roles that she was so good at. If she could have accepted that instead of struggling so hard to be 'dramatic', she might have been happier. Making people laugh is not 'lesser', it's a gift.

And, I agree with other posters that the 'breathy, giggly airhead' was at least partly an act. I think she took mannerisms that appealed to her audience and just emphasized and exaggerated them, possibly to the point that it became part of her. Heck, Lucille Ball made a career out of a 'ditzy redhead', and was apparently a pretty sharp businesswoman.

That is actually a very good way to put it. Laughter brings people joy, and having the ability to do so is an honor. It’s very sad that a lot of actors do not see it this way, even most comedians. It’s also sad that these comedians are often very depressed, and many have attempted or gone through with suicide.

reply

If you hate Marilyn so much, why did you watch her biopic, then? Gotcha!

reply

I just saw 7yr Itch, first movie I have ever seen her in and I totally get it. I can see why both men and women were drawn to her. She has sexuality but is innocent about it which makes men flock to her and women not feel threatened. Plus she is a funny actress.

Amy Adams: too plain to be Lois Lane

reply

I’ve seen Seven Year Itch and one other Marilyn Monroe film, Let’s Make Love.

And by the way, you’re totally wrong about Amy Adams.

reply

The fact that she lived in a world of her own.
