I stopped rooting for them when...

it was revealed Ewan McGregor and the kids survived. After that I stopped caring what happened.

Obviously it's an incredible story that all five of them made it out of there (it's not called The Impossible for nothing) but I couldn't stop thinking about everyone else who had lost so much more than a family on holiday. I know one of the biggest gripes about this movie is the "racist!" argument, but what irks me even more is the decision to focus on a family who made it out of there with all five people intact and only one critically injured... who was flown out days after the disaster on an expensive private jet.

Filmmakers need to present a story like this in the most accessible way possible, which is why films about people caught up in mass tragedies always are about the ones that survive. Movies are a business. They're not made because they want to throw money away. It needs to turn a profit and it's a great risk to tell a story about a real event that's soaked in a great deal of sadness. The wealthy and the poor lost people that day. The fact that they all survived is a blessing and regardless of everyone's circumstance, no one is immune to the devastation of an event like this.

I didn't root for them at all. From the get-go, what a bunch of whining, loud, rude people!

They sensationalized the entire thing like they always do in Hollywood. Personally I think these people are pigs for selling their story when so many died to begin with.

reply

I know. it's disgusting, when not selling their story would have brought all those people back to life.

reply

LOL. Exactly.

Best response to any post I've seen so far on the Board. Elicited a hearty laugh.

AngryPuppeh Oh please, give me a break. Get a grip.

Agree with you 100% OP. I immediately got bored finding out everyone was alive. I know it sounds cynical, but it's unrealistic to me.

...except it's a true story.
