How did this become the third highest grossing film of all time?

I can understand why Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time. Nobody was remotely interested in the story, but the visuals were revolutionary for the time. But they're very ordinary by today's standards. Right now, it's just a completely random movie. The sequel did nothing new, and hardly anyone has ever even spoken about it.
