I think Mavis was better pet owner before she got depressed. At the end she's apologizing to him for neglecting him, it seemed like she was honestly sorry.

Nope. In my profession I saw lots of depressed clients who had pets. It's true pets added something to their life. But they're not a substitute for serotonin.

That hotel room was probably carpeted with dog crap by the end of her stay.
