The thing that made it so frustrating was that none of it had to be.
It wasn't like he had to do what he did to reach the point of needing his arms cut off, and in many ways -- even though it's been years since I've seen the film -- I never thought to myself "Oh, poor boy... he shouldn't get his arms cut off". It was more like, "Good riddance... but maybe a bullet to the head would be better."
