Does Beverly ever lighten up?

I just started this yesterday and I'm on episode 4 of Season 1 right now and I dread every scene that Beverly is in. All she does is complain about everyone and everything.

Is her character like this every season? Does she ever stop complaining about everything? It goes from a great scene with a lot of comedy to her and it just brings it all down and is just annoying to say the least.

Beverly is a buzzkill. It's her thing. She's the straight man to all the looniness.

reply

She has Skyler White Syndrome, i.e., she behaves like an adult.

I think she gets a little bit better, and even forms a friendship with Carol. I like her a lot more than I did during s1. That being said, it wouldn't be the same show if she did a complete about face.

She never really lightens up, but you grow to like her. The show finds its footing in the second season I think, as that's when all the characters really start to balance each other out.

reply

She lightens up - a little bit. A very little bit. I remember disliking her character early on as well. Give it some time, you'll grow to like her.

reply

Yeah. Im on Season 2 Episode 6. She has lightened up. This season is much better than S1. It started off pretty bad though, with Sean taking the role of the buzzkiller, whining about everything, but once him and Matt became friends again it got A LOT better.

I think Beverly's my favorite character. I realized she's responsible for two of the funniest scenes in the series (the vagina monologue and the tea cup analogy). She may have biting commentary, but it's usually completely on point and I, at least, find her choice of words amusing.

She's basically the only level-headed person on the show with any grounding in reality. Sean is an optimist and tends to get caught up in the 'magic'.

reply

>>> She's basically the only level-headed person on the show with any grounding in reality.

I think in some ways Sean's understanding of life is more realistic than Beverly's.

It was Beverly who thought they could just decline the offers for the new show, this season, because in her words

"We've never worried about money before."

And it was Sean who understood that money is a real life concern, and if you just-turn-your-back on a huge money offer, then it might come back to bite you in the future. Because just because you've been blissfully unconcerned about money up to now, doesn't mean you should blissfully remain unconcerned as you head into an uncertain future. You shouldn't be so willing to decline huge money offers that come along, without at least giving it very serious thought. Sean understood this, while Beverly, not so much.

And it's Sean who understands, much more so than Beverly does, that the world works through compromise.

Beverly: "Don't you ever get tired of compromising?"

Sean: "That's the way the world works".

Beverly is smart, but in some ways she is kind of naive and sheltered.

>>> Sean is an optimist, and tends to get caught up in the 'magic'

I think Sean just wants to prove himself in the ultimate proving grounds, and on the biggest "stage". Which have long been considered Hollywood when it comes to tv and movies.

Without Beverly and Sean, it's just a show about stupid people doing stupid things with no semblance of reality. And people are complaining about her? I agree that she's probably my favorite character, as her reactions and expressions are the best part. She complains a lot, because everyone gives her good reason to complain and it confirms that she's the one grounded in reality, at least somewhat. Her complaining is hilarious, so if it bothers you, then you're not getting it.

I do find it interesting that this discussion is about Beverly only, though. Why not Sean also? He's not much different. Sounds like some of you have gender issues.

reply

No. She's always like that. It's what defines her personality. The creators have said Sean's outlook on life is that the glass is half-full, and Beverly's outlook on life is that the glass is an idiot.
But, I think that's what makes her funny. Besides, I think, as you keep watching, you'll see that her complaining is usually true.

reply

i came here to find out the same exact thing. currently on episode 4 too and considering stop watching because of what a buzkill nagger this character is. the rest of the show is funny but shes too awful

reply

She's a mean spirited bitch. The people pretending she is level headed obviously have the same snarky hateful personality. Also she broke up Sean's first marriage and then cheated on him. She is a duplicitous whore.

reply

I love Beverly the most! She IS the only "normal" one on here, which makes her the perfect straight girl for all the craziness. She is lovely, as a person, and I so enjoy her pretty accent. She kind of reminds me of Julie Andrews, who also would probably roll her eyes at the nonsense, were she surrounded by these characters. LoL

P.S. Sean is better off, with Beverly. See? Beverly knows Best!

I dont understand this. Beverley is the most unlikeable character on the show. She's a huge hypocrite and just nags all the time. I just finished the episode where Matt takes her to get free Golden Globe gifts. The whole season and even the start of the episode she's nagging and whining about LA and working on a new show, yet she turns into a kid at disneyland at the free gift place and takes full advantage of everything. I hate her. The character is just too much of a hypocrite to like.

reply

Have you watched the show from the beginning? I think Beverly is the most likable character, and along with Sean, they're the only characters with any sense. She nags because the people around her make her life a living hell, so she nags, instead of lowering herself to their levels of immaturity.

reply

I guess her British wit is lost on some.

reply

Pankoeken, you definitely make some good points. But you forgot to mention the bad haircut.

reply

Beverly was pretty intolerable Season 3. All she kept repeating was "I want to go home!" and wouldn't take any other answer or listen to Sean.

Two things stand out about her, both involving Carol. Now, Carol is self-absorbed but she does like Beverly and thinks highly of her, so when Bev was all excited about going home and there is nothing in L.A. she would miss, Carol asked "Oh, really? There's not one thing you like about here?" (Obviously meaning Carol thought her and Bev had a real friendship and hoped Beverly would actually miss her) and Bev replied "No."

Another was when Carol said to Bev she was her best friend, and Bev said something like "I don't have a best friend, because I'm not seven years old!"

What a b---h.

reply

Both of those things were very rude and mean spirited. She doesn't consider Carol a friend but she has no problem butting into her relationship and refusing to listen to Sean and in the process destroying Sean's chances of creating a quality show.

Beverly is one of the most selfish repugnant characters on the show. She doesn't care about anyone other than herself.

Beverley & Sean are based on the writers Jeffrey Klarik & David Crane; I forget which is which, but the writers said in an interview that one of they themselves is an optimist, and the other one the pessimist.
Klarik & Crane are a couple.

reply

I don't think that I've re-watched any of the earlier seasons so I'm not sure how Beverly has changed, if at all. Part of me sees her as someone who thinks that their life has been ruined by the Hollywood experience. Part of me sees her as someone who has been cjanged by the Hollywood experience (how nasty she has been towards Carol). But then part of me thinks that she doesn't like Hollywood because it is a true reflection of who she really is, and feels self conscious.

Tasmin and Mangan play similar types of people on Green Wing. Maybe not for some, but it is brilliant comedy. There are scenes that are "Borat" funny.
