Keira Knightley got robbed by the Oscars

(Possible spoilers)

Seriously, the almost complete lack of award recognition combined with the trash people talk on this board doesn't reflect well for the people involved. If you know anything about acting, Knightley gave up a lot to that role. The opening scenes were gut-wrenching, and as the movie progressed we could feel her madness subsiding even while her heartbreak was driving her crazy in a different way. It was intense! I just can't stand it when an actor has crafted this wonderful gift of a performance and audiences throw it back without even realizing that she transformed into a Russian Jew, a sexually abused virginal mental patient, a psychoanalyst, a woman on the side, a woman reborn, a rival, a returner to her bad ways, and a wise but wistful woman. Dude!!! You can't ask more from an actor! There's nothing more to give than that! Ugh!

And for the record, I noticed Anna Paquin, Mia Wasikowska, and Olivia Colman also got robbed out of nominations. Pitiful!

While I think Knightley is a beautiful woman, I have not been totally impressed by her acting in the past. That changed when I finally got around to seeing this film on dvd. Very impressive performance. My guess is many who complained about "over-acting" were really just made uncomfortable by her portrayal of a very mentally disturbed young woman. Her performance carefully modulated later transformed behavior as the film progressed, so I doubt it was those later scenes that have led to the over-acting charge.

The acting was generally good, but imo Knightly gave the most impressive performance.

What I don't think you understand, is that some faces are capable of showing the effects of something driving them to facial contortions. Unfortunately, Knightley's is definitely NOT. I blame the director, who should have chosen someone who was not going to create scenes in the very beginning of a movie one is supposed to take seriously, that were so distracting as to make those scenes unwatchable.

My detailed, fully considered opinion: Yuk!

I won't get tied up discussing how good/bad she was or whether she deserved an Oscar nod. I'll just say that Keira was fine in the role.

BTW, if you want to see a virtuoso, over-the-top yet touching mental breakdown on film, watch Glenda Jackson's performance as Antonina Miliukova during the final act of Ken Russell's THE MUSIC LOVERS.

I was thinking the same thing! I didn't much care for the film as a whole (I thought it started out fantastic and went steadily downhill in the second half) but I thought that Keira Knightley was fantastic. The amazing work and emotion that she put into her character really impressed me, and I already thought that she was a wonderful actress before seeing the film. She at least deserved to be nominated for something!

It was heartbreaking to see how much her character was suffering. Very good performance.

You wrote that Knightley 'gave up a lot to that role.' And your point is? Since when does that qualify for any kudos in any area of creativity or art? It's only the results that count. And I'm afraid that the results here are just terrible. When an actor creates a role in which you are always aware that they are "acting," it's not a movie, it's amateurish distraction.

He facial distortions, her body contortions, might have been better done in a documentary on the effects of electrocution. I used to think her attractive. Now, every time I see her, I see that lower jaw jutting out in such an unattractive way, I have to turn away.

She was, as one person already stated, UNWATCHABLE!!! She didn't make me think 'compassion,' she made me break into an hysteria of the non-psychiatric sort.

In my opinion, her performance was not only unwatchable, but it made the movie unwatchable, too. I usually enjoy this director's work, but here, it bordered upon comedy because of Knightley's performance. In short, Knightley gave us 15 pounds of acting in a 5 pound bag.

I have a large sculpture here, where the sculptor put his heart and soul into its creation. He worked so hard and put so much emotion into crafting it, he died in the creative process. It's ugly piece of crap, and I'd let it go for a song, if you're interested.

I believe that the only way Knightley could get an Oscar for her performance in this movie, is if she ran upon the event stage, grimaced to the audience, and ripped an Oscar from the hands of someone actually deserving of it. Better luck next time.

It's nice to finally converse with someone who's trying to make a relevant argument about acting. But in response, I say, acting has nothing to do with the audience being physically attracted to the actor. That's why King Lear, Shylock, and George and Martha from "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" are popular characters for actors.
You clarified your misunderstanding of acting when you brought up the analogy of the large sculpture which is an "ugly piece of crap". But the real talent in this movie doesn't come from showing clips of beautiful women acting beautifully, that would be pornography. The talent in "A Dangerous Method" comes from showing a wild beast that becomes a loving, lonely human being. If you're not interested in that storyline, then that's one thing. This is just not your movie, and of course that's fine. But I repeat, no one with any real knowledge of acting is going to put down that performance. It's the kind of performance that makes actors proud.

Why is it that when Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, James Dean, and Jack Nicholson freak out on screen, it's widely considered a virtuoso performance, but when a woman does it it's called over-acting? Reading over this board and others on the topic, I see clearly that this is less an issue of acting merits than it is about whether women are accepted as equal forces in the acting field.
Ms. Knightley hasn't only created a nice performance for herself and fans, she also continued the work done by Lilian Gish, Bette Davis, Ingrid Bergman, Natalie Wood, and countless others who have advanced the level of quality in female screen performances.

You wrote: "I say, acting has nothing to do with the audience being physically attracted to the actor."

I wasn't talking about being attracted to an actor. I was talking about being 'repulsed' by one.

There were parts to this movie where Knightley did shine as an actress, however these were not enough for me to put those repulsive scenes out of mind. Let's be honest, most people do not go to movies to see love interests look repulsive. I think her role could have been accomplished without me having to reach for the 'TUMS.' Now, that would have been an achievement in acting.

could not agree with you more. I knew she was a great actress before, but she cranked it up a few notches on this one. BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE!

I agree. Her performance was pretty amazing.

I thought she was great. She put hysterical behavior onscreen. She risked a lot.

She expressed so much through her eyes.

I have spent a good part of my life around people speaking English with Slavic accents, and her accent was flawless.
