Keira Knightley is just painful to watch.

Seriously painful. Cringe-worthy. That accent was atrocious and her general performance ruined everything for me. I couldn't even finish watching the movie, ugh.

Just watch it in German with subtitles.
No phoney accent and it`s more authentic nontheless, as they`re all supposed to speak German anyways.

I agree completely with Esuma's post (Wed Feb 15 2012 06:39:57).

If you ever saw a psychotic patient in a mental hospital being restrained by 6 attendants, you'd think that patient was too much "over the top."

I've seen it and they don't look like Knightley.

Really??

When and where?

What were the circumstances you could see such unusual behavior that is off-limits to the general public?

Shes painful to watch in every single movie I've seen her in, except for perhaps 'Bend it Like Beckham'. Another case of pretty blonde white girl sustains career with her looks...
And holy *beep* ive seen alot of her movies for some reason...

Crazy people are often an unpleasant sight. I thought she did reasonably well. Also a pretty good Russian accent, except for when she says the name of her husband Pavel-something.

Keira's willingness to appear ugly, insane and psychotic in the beginning was brave and appropriate to the role. Her portrayal of a mad banshee being transformed into a woman of depth and beauty was brilliant, and I would consider her performance worthy of an Academy Award. Keira burns with an inner fire in some of the challenging roles she's taken on. This is a film for adults with adult themes, serious dialogues about mental illness, and the conflicts in the development of psychiatry during the turn of the century, and the film is not intended to please those who are turned off by such human aberrations because they were expecting some juvenile entertainment and a beauty pageant. Part of the film was intended to turn some people off because mental illness is not a pretty picture.

reply

Well there was not a lot of mental illness on display, in fact there was very little of anything on display - for a Cronenberg fan that's more of a turnoff.

It felt kind of odd seeing her in this role, but I think she did an excellent job, people who suffer from that condition are not so easy or pleasant to watch and if she managed to create that feeling here that is just a plus...

I commend Keira for her physicality in channeling her (their) version of an hysteric patient's hysterics...but her accent was really, really awful, grating, painful to listen to--that was the worst part of the movie for me!

Her accent didn't grate on me half as much as her acting. Her acting was untransparent all until the last quarter of the movie. In most of her scenes, I could tell she was acting.

One Leo DiCaprio dressed as a woman would've done a better job.
