I thought it was a happy ending. They saved humanity, made everyone a citizen of Elysium and provided free, instant, heal-anything, magic medical care for all.
sharein a way it was, but they killed off our hero - the lead. you rarely can do that and have a successful movie. people want to feel good.
my thought at the ending when the ships landed with the medbeds was "oh wow, now everyone will be healthy, and over population will fly carelessly out of control" very sad ending to me.
