I gave it up a long time ago, now I'm back and behind. Season 6 help

I'm at the very beginning of the season. So what the HELL is with the black and white/color thing and all the jumping between two timelines? It looks like two different episodes running at the same time. I know that the present is in color, but I can't seem to determine what they think we are learning from the events in one to help us understand what is going on in the other. It's just a ball of confusion.

I hope this doesn't continue through the season.

B&W was for when they were preparing for Operation Walker Parade; colour is supposed to be a "dry run" where they go through the motions of everything they plan to do without actually letting the walkers through yet. It allowed them to get into the action right away but also flesh out what it is they are trying to do, and what the relationship's become like between Rick and the longer-term Alexandrians since last season (though not much time has likely passed). As far as exposition goes, I thought it was fine.
