Negan Appreciation Thread

Who else loves Negan? The moment he stepped out of this caravan it was like a new alpha male had come to the group and I was fascinated. The brutality, cruelty mixed with his humor is great character work of the actor. He has the "end boss" quality all other TWD villains lacked.
If youre with me please feel free to post your favorite Negan moment or quote.

I start with the "Our next serial killer" quote. In the worst of all episodes, with your a***on the edge of the seat, scared as hell and excited about what happens next - this quote made me laugh!

He is a great villain, and JDM is doing a great job making me absolutely loathe him.

reply

Oh yes...would love to see him on a convention once.

reply

He is going to Horrorhound in Cincinnati this weekend, and I will get to see him there! I can't wait to tell him how much I "hate him" hehehe

reply

Please tell us of your experience after. What day are you going? I hope you scheduled a Photo op. It'd be sooo cool to post it here. You could blank out your pic somehow, couldn't you? Can one get photos other than the photo op, lennonforever? I noticed the ops are a little high, and as you can see I know nothing about these sort of things.

I would love to attend something special like this just one time, but can't see it ever happening anywhere near my area, so please indulge me/us with ALL the details of your adventure, lennonforever!!!

reply

Actually, I am not doing the photo op with him, but I will go to his table for an autograph and informal photo with him. Usually autographs are priced about $30-50 and the celebs usually bring 8x10 photos.I will try to post it thru 'Photobucket' or something. You can also take your own photos with most of them, but some post "no photos" at their booth. You can always sneak them though.

I am going the entire weekend and this is my fourth time going. It is great fun and I have met many of my on-line horror friends at these.

I am taking a photo op with only one person this time, Mr Wilford Brimley! That fine old gentleman from many a show and commercials. He played "Blair" in one of my favs "The Thing" 1982.

FYI : There is also a Horrorhound every September in Indianapolis. There are several such events all over the country.

Wow, what a great opportunity!

"Usually autographs are priced about $30-50"

I noticed some of the others were $100, and that not even JDM. His were sold out so the price wasn't shown.

"I am taking a photo op with only one person this time, Mr Wilford Brimley!"

I shouldn't, but I do, envy you. He's been a fav for a long time.

I know *sigh*. My husband would think me a lunatic if I even hinted at wanting to attend.😱 So, I'll hafta contine to live through you, and others, lennonforever.🙄😃

I agree, he is a great bad-guy... much better than The Govenor.

reply

Negan, imo, is rediculous. This isn't a slam on the excellent actor, who is doing the absolute best he can with what he has been given, but rather everything else. Hear me out.

Much of the earlier part of the season was having most of the characters acting completely strange and unlike themselves, contrived circumstances just to prop up the image of Negan as a badass. Just bad writing. For instance, Darryl jumping up and acting alone in ep. 1 and causing someone's death was not what an earlier season Darryl would have done.

If he'd been written with better lines, he would fit in better with that world, but so much of what he says sounds like something a 13 year old edgelord would write in his mary sue fan fiction. That whole "think about what could happen, think about what did happen" was so stupid that we make fun of it still. Think about how he very smartly plans ahead and uses his nearly genius level intellect to ruthlessly psychologically torment others to maintain his position, but then he opens his mouth and I'm like "wtf?"

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but Negan _does_ remind people of the Governor. And obviously so, even this thread mentions the Governor. Just because it was in the comics that way doesn't mean it translates to the screen in the same way. I never read the comics so to me it feels like a rehashed villain. That said, if they had chosen Negan _instead_ of the Governor earlier in the tv series as a main bad guy that would have been probably a lot better.

Now with all that said, Negan's character - dialogue and clear on screen motivations - have become a lot better as the season has progressed...perhaps the writers have found their groove.

No you are right about Negan. He is very juvenile and "comic book villain". He is clearly behaving as silly as his comic book persona. Negan is a sociopath even before the ZA.
I liked the Governor. He was trying to really do a good job for his people ( well, in the TV show, not so much in the comics IMO). Anyway, the Governor was a driven man who was a good person before the ZA and tried hard for a normalcy in the midst of the ZA. He is psychopathic not sociopathic, in that he was driven that way because of the horrendous events of the ZA.

My main complaint with JDM right now is that he's too scrawny and physically unimposing.
Is he battling cancer or smth, I never noticed JDM be so thin.
Just look at his jeans around the butt area, looks like they're about to fall off.
And that whole strapped leather jacket thing isn't giving him that hunk appearance he's supposed to have.

Anyone care to explain, please?

reply

IDK, but you are right, his frame is not very imposing. But he makes up for it in his formidable demeanor.

reply

JDM was playing an alcoholist in one of his previous roles and had to lose weight for that.
But in his recent whereabouts, the european TWD tour, he looks like he gained weight again. So we might get to see Negan with more meat on next season :)
