We'll never get anything close to COLUMBO again, but have any of you checked out Poker Face?
There are a few noticeable differences, and a few similarities.
Similar
The credits font is identical
At one point in Ep1 "This old man" is playing in the casino
Murder shown to the audience first, and the star Charlie has to figure it out
It's known as Inverted detective story format, or Howcatchum, or Reverse Whodunnit
Different
She is not a detective
She is on the run, and travels to a different town every episode
After the murder which is shown first, the next scene flashes back to before the murder, to show Charlie's relationship to the victim.
The suspects are not all filthy rich!
She doesn't have the enjoyable mannerisms of Columbo, but it's entertaining to watch the "howcatchum" format again, for sure.
With her not being a detective, I immediately thought "OH NO, here's another MURDER SHE WROTE female who encounters death every single week of her life", LOL. OK so there's that. But at least she's "on the move", so it's not like there's a murder every week in sleepy Cabot Cove, MAINE! That town quickly propelled to the highest murder rate per capita, in the world!
Dick Van Dyke (ironically a former Columbo murderer!) also had way too many connections to the murders on Diagnosis Murder, but at least his son was a detective, and he was a consultant to the police, so it was more justified.
