Jack is a criminal and no one cares?
it's only occurring to me now that Jack is a criminal and it all gets swept under the rug. He burned down the first church and then stole the book on how to build the new one. And there's no repercussions.

everyone sinnned! so what!
shareThe book is not about building cathedrals, it's about geometry; the abbot says it's written by Euclid.
shareHe committed a criminal act but his intentions were good. Compared to many around him who were plain evil in the name of god, he was practically a saint.
Quit ya moanin
The old church was a dump.
In fact, he improved the property value by 5 pieces of gold when he burned it down!
As for the stolen book, clearly he thought it was a library but he should pay the 5 shilling fine now owing on it.
Now that we have the prequel novel, The Evening and the Morning, it's kind of sad that the cathedral built by the protagonist of that novel has been destroyed.
