They did take a long time to build up this season but Episode 9 was right back at the level of classic Dexter. It was quite an adjustment to have them go from so many major urban characters and beautiful sunny beaches to a tiny town in the middle of winter in bum-f nowhere.

And ... sadly ... I agree with your prediction as well. Or at least I'm very concerned about it.
Seems like Showtime's producers get too hands-on with Dexter in particular, resulting in rubbish thought up by corporate suits
The best series allow the creators to paint themselves into corners with no clear way out, then sit around and brainstorm something creative. Buffy actually dies. Thanos snaps AND doesn't get reversed until years later. The Empire strikes back and apparently wins. And so on.
Bingo. They did. The ending is more fucked up than the previous finale. Only thing is this time they made the ending final so there will be no more chances to fix it.
