It is both, and it is factual. The show overlaps educational input from historians with dramatic scenes. In ep. 1 we meet the real pirates who are squabbling over Spanish gold in 1715, which are Captain Hornigold, Sam Bellamy, Blackbeard, Henry Jennings, Charles Vane, etc. Anything with pirates is going to have a lot of action and be entertaining. share

Indeed, that's why I loved Black Sails.
[yes] I'll watch any pirate show or movie. After watching this one, I can see that Black Sails version of Captain Flint is clearly inspired by Benjamin Hornigold's real life.
