Unharted Movie Starring Wahlberg, DeNiro and Joe Pesci

So we have Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake, Robert DeNiro as Nathan's father and Joe Pesci as Nathan's uncle. What could go wrong?

What about that other video game movie adaptation not too recently, starring Wahlberg? Max Payne was it? How did that turn out?

It's a travesty. The "Nathan Drake" we know and love will not appear in this movie. God knows what the plot will be like. Make me wonder if there will even be treasure hunting.

I couldn't agree more. There is no wit in Mark Wahlberg what-so-ever. He's great at what he does (intimidating with a stiff upper lip, occasionally punching people in the face with an almost Harrison Ford-ish quality and cracking a deadpan delivered joke afterwards), but jeez, they might as well have cast Adam Baldwin! Great guys, but waaay too macho to be able to play the more Spiderman-like Drake. There was one guy in Hollywood who was born to play Drake, and we all know it's Nathan Fillion.

We just have to hope that Wahlberg somehow is able to channel the performances of Daniel Craig as Bond and Heath Ledger as The Joker - two castings that also made no sense what so ever when you first heard of them - but I doubt it. There is no respect for the material in Hollywood, games get adapted with the same care (none) that comic books where once upon a time.

reply

esapesaqe, you are absolutely right. It should be Fillion and none else. And what I know is that Wahlberg cannot perform well as Drake, he just can not. Wahlberg knows how to play rugged serious cop types, but witty adventurers? No way. And as it comes to the video game adaptations, we know he's not going to do well. We have Max Payne to prove that. A character just up to Wahlberg's type and somehow he messed that up... I mean god dammit. The man himself said that he did not want to try even playing the game because he was afraid of "getting addicted to it". What does that tell about him and video games?

The problem here is that no one attached to this wants to do a video game movie. The director just wants to do movie with DeNiro and Pesci, Wahlberg just wants the money, and who knows what the writer wants to do. (We know video game adaptation is not that). As far as the word goes, there's nothing Uncharted related in the movie, other than the name of the character and the movie title.

And (like you said), as long as video games are not being taken seriously in Hollywood, we cannot hope to get good movies. The comics had a long history of mistreatment and abuse until directors with proper respect to the source material came along and made them into good movies. There has been attempts, most notably the Bioshock movie adaptation by Gore Verbinski, which was put into ice because he wanted to respect the game's origin and make it R-rated. Of course the studio friezed that project. I don't know how that will pan out, I'm slightly optimistic with that movie, but we can't really say until it comes out (if ever).

I'm more concerned with the direction they are taking with the story than I am with Marky Mark as Drake. The story sounds terrible.

I actually think he can be funny, though maybe not this type of funny, but I'd give him a shot. The butchering of the storyline, though? No thanks. I'll pass.

Hollywood's handling of video game movies is borderline criminal.

I was really hoping they would cast Nathan Fillion for Drake. He seems like he would be perfect!

Jensen Ackles would have been a good choice too. He already has that smartassness being dean on Supernatural and the build, even the age.

In my opinion of making Uncharted as a film, I wouldn't see Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake. He failed to deliver Max Payne, why play the smartass treasure hunter Drake? I don't think it's right. But, of course, Directors do movies for the money and recognition and having guys like Pesci and De Niro in their films.

Also, the Father-and-Son angle isn't so great in my opinion. Turning Uncharted into a 'family-orientated' film isn't the greatest idea. Scrap that and bring Nathan Drake to life with Sully and Elena for another grand adventure.

If not, then just stick to video games. Hollywood needs to start getting their brains working again and stop doing these silly remakes.

Yeah I think the family focus seems a bit strange too - when I played the games I got the feeling that he was kind of a rolling stone.

In case any of you had any hope this movie was going to be good...have you read this?

"The big screen version of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is starting to sound less like Raiders of the Lost Ark and more like National Treasure. Director David O. Russell says his upcoming game-to-film adaptation will focus on treasure-hunting hero Nathan Drake (to be played by Mark Wahlberg) -- as well as his extended family.

The writer-director, who said he is now halfway done with his script, told The Los Angeles Times, "This idea really turns me on that there's a family that's a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities ... [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice."

"We'll have the family dynamic, which we've done in a couple of movies now," said Russell, whose past films about dysfunctional familes include Flirting with Disaster and The Fighter. "And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That's a really cool idea to me."

Russell also called the urgency of the Uncharted production, a high priority for Columbia Pictures who wants the film out sooner than later, "a locomotive.""

That sounds terrible, doesn't it.

I read that and I hear 'It turned a buck before so we'll just trot out the same tired garbage, it'll be fine...'

I also agree Jensen Ackles would have been a good choice for Nate. Bruce Campbell for Sully.

Why not Nolan North the guy who ACTUALLY DID THE VOICE OF NATHAN DRAKE IN THE GAMES. He even looks the part.....check it out....

for the same reasons the guy who voiced hitman didn't play the part. he's a voice actor for one and he doesn't have any star power. I agree i'd rather see him play the part but it's just not going to happen.
