Why is this low on score?

I'm reading the top user reviews and it seems just fine, but why is it getting rated a 6.something? I think everything Keanu Reeves touches, gets downvoted.

What good effects?

The effects in this film were about on par with Sharktopus.

Because the movie is not very well done...

It has a 29% average from critics aswell so its not just fans.

reply

Opinions! I like them. They are quite subjective.

reply

Yes there are. Here's another subjective opinion:

THIS MOVIE SUCKS DONKEY BALLS!!

reply

29%? That sounds right, because the general consensus of the critics is usually inverse to how entertaining the movie actually is. The movie was about a 71% on the "entertaining factor."

reply

I believe it is because of stupid people who doesn't bother to watch and just vote 1 just because it is a tale from japan made in to a movie by america. usually I don't like it but I never vote for a movie I didn'ty watch. they did a preatty good job this time.

reply

a pitty...., even a bigger pitty is the boxoffice..., if they hade made the exact same movie, but with a (fitting) DC or Marvel hero, it would have made 5x bigger boxoffice and 10-30% better score -.-'
(maybe a manga/animé lisence could have saved the movie at the boxoffice...)

imo Hiroyuki Sanada stole the show... (he's feels like a tough/action "Benicio Del toro" from japan....), I'd like to see him in more movies.., he should play Guts in a Beserk Movie...(Gut's feels kind of his age during the last chapters...)

(or I'd like too finally see some good hollywood movies based on "animés/mangas",.. since movies like MOS are based on US comics, but use heavily "manga/animé" (action) sytles, it's time that mangas/animés get movies they deserve in hollywood too...)

reply

In Hollywood? Really? They did try to translate one anime into a Hollywood movie. It was called Dragonball. Hollywood murdered the movie. The butchered it to the point that it was almost unrecognizable.

reply

I wouldn't wanna see a Berserk live action movie though. Just don't think it translates well into live action.
But I sure hope they do a good work on the new anime and do not skip the dialogue as they did in the first two (I reckon the third followed the same style - but haven't seen it yet) parts. To me Berserk is more dialogue driven than they made it to be in the new anime series ...

You could watch Hiroyuki Sanada in some good films, perhaps.

reply

You can't seriously believe this movie deserves above a 7 do you? Think about it

6.5 is a fair score. It's not a terrible score by any stretch but it is fair even though it was entertaining

reply

Low ratings are probably from people who don't know its a true story and aside from a few obvious additions, in fact very close to what actually took place in 1700. Sure, it has its WTFIT moments, but overall its a good watch.

reply

Low ratings are from people who saw a movie based in japan where everyone spoke English and not Japanese!
The CGI was HORRIBLE at most parts (if not everywhere)!
The surroundings looked more like China or Thailand then Japan (small mountains wide appart etc.).
The acting was mediocre at best.
Keanu Reeves didn't add much to the movie other then his name (some names will attract people)

reply

fyi there have been/are hundreds of written and theatrical interpretations of this true story. this being one accessible to western audiences. obviously you're the expert on what every single inch of asia looks like. nah... and the cgi was far from horrible, it was spot on. and keanu did a bang up job... my god man.. go watch your jacked copy of harry potter why dont ya. do one pal

reply

Your rebuttal is weak at best. The movie's CG was not up to par. Coming as I am from Japan i can vouch that most of the movie did not look Japanese in its scenery. I did not mind Keanu but his role seemed rather downplayed from the original story, yes there are many adaptations of this film but this has to be one of the ones that is farther from what the story tells. It was to Hollywood glamored up for my tastes. The people that will love this film are not people that understand Japanese history or its people rather people that know nothing about it or are whats to be expected by the USA Anime loving community which we from and in Japan cannot stand.

reply

and yours = "fat man on a broken chair learning to type".. enjoy blubber. CGGCGCFU. it was meant just for your plate. and, "coming as I am IN Japan" right now... I can vouch for such scenery. there ARE deserts in japan. borrowed from our fathers in china, might explain something or nothing. the aborigine of the island are? the story is a true one, any way told, it resolves and evolves for ages and those who choose to seek or shun truth. hows that fatty?

reply

People are morons, this movie is very entertaining and visually awesome. I gave it an 8. It deserves to be 7,5 or 8 not a damn mere 6. I just saw a *beep* up idiot on another post calling this movie an abomination and he hasn't even seen it. Mankind is doomed.

I agree totally. I also have given the movie 7.5 stars. From the reviews I thought this was going to be a horrible movie, but it wasn't bad at all. I think it was all the bad reviews that killed this movie. I really enjoyed the scene in the Buddhist temple with the monks. I loved the special effects. I think people who don't like the movie don't see the spiritual context embedded in the film.

reply

Exactly!

reply

I also gave it an 8. It only lost points for making me wish I was watching a subtitled movie (and I hate subtitled movies!). It lost a little with it being in English I think. The editing was a little all over the place too. Does anyone know if there is a director's cut?

reply

and I hate subtitled movies!

Are you dumb?

reply

Here's the truth; because it's a terrible movie.

Yes, even for a movie that is meant to be simple entertainment and fantasy samurai hack n slash, this movie falls short. I love fantasy movies, I love sword & fighting movies, I love Japanese culture and history (and really respect keanu Reeves for liking that aswell), but wow, this movie did everything so bad.

First of all, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, in this movie is such a stereotype cliché that its laughable. The "stranger/foreigner/outcast that gets accepted into the lords house and is raised there, falls in love with the lords daughter but is always hated by a rival kid" has been done so, so, so many times.

Everything is so over-exaggeratet. The hero is not just good, but he is supder good in every flawless aspect if his existence. The villain is not just evil, but he is super evil just for the sake of it. The girl is not just nice, she is super nice in every way. It's like watching stupid cartoon characters without nuance.

Also, the acting was TERRIBLE, especially from Keanu and the girl. Wow, just... terrible. Not to mention how every scene is cartoonized to emphasize some emotion (probably because the plot itself is too dumb to do so). Like when the girl is dragged away before Keanu is punished with a beating, it goes into slow motion as the girl is pulled away, she turns back with tears in her eyes and looks dreamingly at keanu while sad orchestral music is heavily playing in the background. Seriously, that was laughable. We actually laughed watching that. And many, MANY scenes just like that gave way for many (unintentional) laughs.

Other than that, the plot is completely standard, by-the-book rubbish. No surprises, no innovation, no creativity, nothing. After 30 mins in I think everyone already knows how the movie will end. You're then pretty much watching it just hoping to see a cool fight somewhere, nothing else.

I really don't get people who think this movie is good. If you take the absolute basic, overused, standardized elements of a story and then just add a touch of Japanese culture/mysticism, you get this flick. Nothing interesting about it at all.

Then of course the movie is FULL of absolute stupid elements like the evil lords men releasing Oishi from the dungeon (for absolutely no logical reason whatsoever), that witch lady sticking up her head (when absolutely EVERYONE else is bowing down) and making a retarded grin just so Keanu can notice her eyes, Keanu suddenly being better & faster than his demon master despite not having used those powers for over ten years, and so on, so on.

All in all, a very poor movie. Even RZA's "Man with the iron fists" is better than this. My advice? Skip this flick. If you want cool samurai hack n slash with nice fantasy elements, watch a couple of nice animes like Afro Samurai, Ninja Scroll or Samurai Schamploo instead.
