If this ISN'T the most depressing film what is?

Have you seen something sadder? I haven't, well maybe Cannibal Holocaust, but that is a very exploitative film.. Okay those two are the most depressing films that made me feel sad after and while watching them.

How about you guys/gals?

Mavis, I'm a married man!

Alpha Dog comes to mind.

I've seen movies that were sick, that were sad, that were depressing, vile, or just disturbing, but I've rarely wished I could "unsee" any of them. This one makes me want a memory wipe. It's "good" but if I had known what was about I wouldn't have watched it.

I watched Melancholia a few days prior to watching this film and I think Melancholia wins the 'most depressing' title. I loved both movies and I feel they were both depressing for different reasons, but just everything about Melancholia made you sad. My wife watched 30 seconds of the movie with me and left saying she was already too sad.

Funny you mention that movie.

When someone asks me for the saddest film I've ever seen I have always answered, immediately: "On the Beach". You are absolutely right, however: "Melancholia" has been a close second for me. "Never Let Me Go" is right in there with the other two. The hallmark, to me, of a really good movie is how much you think about it after you watch it. While watching "Never Let Me Go" I complained to wifey how boring it was; afterwards, I couldn't keep thinking how interesting and very sad it was.

I really don't want to have to watch any of the three again. :)

How about Grave of the Fireflies. I'm guessing this is probably mentioned in one of the replies to your question I haven't yet read.

I found this to be sad, but not the saddest.

Be sure to proof your posts to see if you any words out

Requiem for a Dream usually gets added to most 'depressing films' lists.

A few films I can think of are Requiem for a Dream, Christine F., Tyrannosaur and The Unloved.

Christine F.

I'm glad you mentioned this movie.

There's something wrong with Esther.

This film definitely leaves a weight in the heart of any empathetic viewer.

I've seen much heavier/harder to watch drama films, but I can't recall which ones at the moment. I can only remember "Touching the Void", which is one of the heaviest films I've ever experienced. It's the true story about two mountain climbers that have an accident, and this one guy's determination to try to survive. It's one horrible turn of events after another, constant bad luck on top of bad luck on top of bad luck... on and on, endlessly. I'm not sure if I've ever empathised with a character so much, and it was so awful that by half-way in I couldn't stop laughing, needing to take the horrors as a dark comedy.

Life can be brutal.

"Never Let Me Go" reminded me a lot of Gattaca, another very sad movie about genetic segregation in society, only set in the near future rather than recent past.
