What would you have done?

I personally would have jumped, landed on to the wolf's back, scared it and made it run with me still on its back :P

I would have taken off my skis and ski boots and thrown them to the ground, then I would have climbed up to the cable, lifted my hands around it, then lifted my legs up to the top, and shimmied down to the next lift, then climbed down the ladder on the pole (Most poles have ladders on them), then walked over to my boots, put them on, put on the skis, ski down to the bottom, get in the car, and get help. The End.

Also, all ski resorts will check and make sure that everyone is off the mountain before they close. lol!

I would have waited until the morning and just done a lot of stretches to keep from freezing. There's no way I would jump or try to get across the cable. Too dangerous!!

reply

I would have just sat there, covered my face and hands with clothes and waited for help and maybe shouted as loud as I could.

Its a ski resort. Some people are bound to come along around that vicinity. Jumping from the lift or sliding down the cable is not an option.

I would rather sit there, starve or freeze to death than jump and break my legs or my back and get eaten alive by wolves.

I would have pulled out my cell phone and called 911. What, no service you say? Wrong. 911 calls operate on a different signal when you are away from your local service. It would have gone through.

And what kind of stupidity does the writer of this movie show when he has three 20-somethings stranded on a chair lift and not one of them has a cell phone? I mean, c'mon. At least two of them would have had cell phones and probably would have sent a hundred text messages to friends during the ride up the chair lift. People of this age CAN'T communicate anymore without their thumbs and a keypad.

reply

Movie was probably written 5 years ago. There were a lot less cell phones then. Not to mention I suspect plenty of people don't take their phones onto the slopes when skiing anyway.

What would I have done? Definitely not jump. Nothing good is going to come from jumping 50 feet from a stuck ski lift. The clothing rope idea would not work as has been pointed out. The best strat would probably be to wait at least a day or two to see if help comes. After that, pick the lightest, most fit/able person to scale the cable, using both hands and legs, back to the nearest pole and climb down.

Uh-no....your legs have been dangling in the cold then you decide to jump and land on them...they will snap like toothpicks.

Ok, this may sound weird but if they had bounced enough and jumped enough on the lift (as we see in the movie) it would have fallen. Just pull your knees up, hold on and brace yourselves. Worse possible injury your butt hurts from the landing. I'm just saying....

:)

I would have made a chain with the three people then the last one could jump without breaking the legs, and the run like a bitch for help

Humans can survive up to 7 days without water and 30 days withoud food...I dunno about being frozen, but they could've stayed there until friday, it was 5 days, they would have to drink each others piss or eat some snow but they would probably live...and that dude should have put that hoodie on and that bitch should have used her hat to cover her face, so stupid

reply

Well, let's not forget that it's a movie... they needed them to show their faces all the time, expose their hands to frostbite, etc. Nobody in their right mind would grab on to a metal bar without wearing gloves, and leave it out for the whole night! Hell, I remember the last time I went skiing and had to take off my gloves to use my cell, the wind was so cold that I couldn't have my hand out for more than a minute. So, yeah, it's just a movie, and you have to forgive these things, otherwise you never enjoy these flicks. There's always someone bitching about these sort of things... "why don't they xxxxx", "how come he's not xxxxx".

But if one had to survive that situation, I wouldn't be sure if you'd be able to last five days up there, because snow soaks up your clothes pretty fast (even the waterproof ones eventually soak up) and sooner or later you'll be soakin' wet, also exposed to strong winds... meaning that frostbite, flu, fever, etc. would definitely be something to consider.

Eating snow is not good because it makes you lose body heat, so your body will burn energy to keep you from freezing, and you don't want to be burning any extra energy, if you are stranded, you want to conserve your energy. Also there's a chance you can get sick by eating snow... or make your stomach hurt, you know, smog and all that shXt gets to rain and show... unless you're away from urban areas, where snow would be safer to eat.

I guess the safest bet would be to either make a rope out of clothes, or get to the ladder by climbing up the cable.

It's always interesting reading these these of threads where everyone becomes Ranger Survival Hero X, because of course they would've been stronger and smarter than everyone in the movie.

Jump.

And this is how I would do it :)

1. First off - I would gather the strongest piece of say, 2-3 feet rope or fabric from the group. Most likely, at least one of us would have a belt (I do on my snowboard pants).

2. I'd make the tallest person in the group strap on the snowboard (one binding attached only)

3. While bending him forward til the lowest tube/pipe on the chair (I dont remember if this actual chair had a legrest or not), I'd bind both his hands to this tube with the belt or cloth - in a way that allows him til grab both his hands around the tube. The belt/cloth is merely a safety to easy off some of the pressure while eventually hanging from the tube.

4. Here comes the crucial part. The guy now grabbing the tube, strengthened with the belt, lets himself out slowly. He is now hanging from the lowest tube on the chair - with the snowboard attached on one foot.

5. The lightest person in the company, "slides" down this person, wrapping her/his hands and legs TIGHTLY around the hanging person. When reaching the foot attached to the snowboard with the hands - one hand reach for the heelside of the lower, free snowboard binding. The heelside-area of the binding should give a very good grip. When cool and collected - drop! Try to fall on the side/rolling to minimize the impact.

The hanging person has now minimized the altitude with the height of one tall person with their arms in the air (say 230 cm), the width of the snowboardstance (say 70 cm) and the lightest persons height with his/her arms in the air (say 200 cm) His/her feet are now dropping from a total 5 meters (15 feet) less altitude!

...Oh, and then theres them friggin wolves. If the person on the ground can snowboard - put on the spare snowboard (DO NOT slide it down on the ass as he did in the movie) and straightline it down as the grim reaper is chasing you.

With a bit of luck too - I think one could survive this one :)

I actually handle really scary situations very calmly and really have a sense of what to do. I had a girlfriend years ago put her arm through a window severing arteries in her arm and blood was flying out everywhere. I was the only one there out of 6 people that knew what to do. I stopped the bleeding and saved her life and arm. Took the ambulance 30 min to get there. Also when it that cold if you can manage to keep your chest warmer than the rest of your body it will cause the blood in your heart to warm up warming the rest of your body. A lot of people do not know this but it was tested and proven

reply

Kudos to you for thinking quickly! I"m not afraid of blood but a lot of people get scared at the sight of lots of blood and it's easy to go into shock. In times of crisis it's especially helpful to have someone who can put the stress aside and just stop and think efficiently.

Good info about the heart. That's very true and good to know :)

As soon as I saw they were stuck I would have climbed up to the top grabbed the cable and wrapped my legs locking them onto the cable and worked my way down. I would not have wasted anytime for the fact that you only have so much mobility in that cold weather. Makes no difference how bad it hurt or how mch those cables cut inot me I would have fought through and everyone would have been saved or I would have died trying.I did think about that evergreen tree but could not see ho far they were away from it. If it was close enough I would have jumped onto the top of that tree and climbed down. Eother way I would not have let anyone die.

I would have thrown the other two clowns off of the chair lift, so I could acquire more space to think. This would have also provided the wolves with a nice dinner, so once I execute my plan, and get safely to the ground, I won't have to worry about the wolves -they would be napping.
