What's up with de Niro looking into the camera several times when eating cornflakes?

When Pesci and de Niro are having a breakfast (I think it's before de Niro flies in a plane or something), several times during that scene de Niro looks into the camera. Is that some kind of a new filming technique? To feel more relatable to the audience or something?

I noticed that as well. There are at least two scenes where DeNiro seems to repeatedly break the fourth wall. I didn't find this as bad as Peschi repeatedly looking down to read his lines.
