Everyone keeps going on about how great it is tommys getting the widow money and how Brendan should give her some money. No he shouldn't it's his money that he earned why should he give it to someone he doesn't even know. From what we saw the family had a nice house and weren't exactly struggling. Why couldn't the lazy woman go and get a job herself. Plus the army benefits she'd be getting especially from death caused by their own people

shareWith an Awol, it could involve jail time. But in his situation with saving the other soldiers and the near death experience, he wouldn't be given the maximum punishment. Legal can be awful but there are routes to reduce any punishment.

There's nothing wrong with helping her out and I'm sure Tommy will convince Brendan and others to help. Brendan wasn't a heartless jerk (without reason). He doesn't seem the type to just let Tommy fail after the match.
