New blood in the form of Sony’s Jared Leto-fronted Morbius led the global box office this weekend with an $84M debut, while Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2 got off to a booming $25.5M start from its first 31 offshore markets. Warner Bros/DC also has something to crow about as The Batman topped $700M worldwide.

Ahead of his domestic bow, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 got off to a fast-breaking early start in about 50% of the film’s overseas footprint. Paramount is delighted with the results which are 2% above the original 2020 movie in like-for-likes. Increases were strong over the weekend with very positive word of mouth and No. 1s in such key markets as the UK ($6.4M/651 locations), France ($5.7M/675), Australia ($2.8M/289), Spain ($2.2M/339) and Germany ($2.1M/553). Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Norway, Belgium, New Zealand, Slovakia and South Africa all also saw No. 1 starts.

Metascore is now 45 with 20 critic reviews. The general consensus among critics is that it is okay, but too long, at over two hours, and wears out its welcome.

The dates are not accurate, but the Internet indicates that it will be available on HBO-Max 45 days after the theatrical start or run, and on Disney Plus at some point.

I brought four girls to see the original film and they loved it. I've purchased Disney Plus for them, so I think the cost of tickets and concessions is too much for a theatrical viewing. I can even get the Tuesday discount, when they are off school next week, but it's not worth paying over $60.
