He knows his mind is jeopardized and froze twice already in the 1st episode because of his Death flashbacks.
A good Captain would take themselves out of the game.
No respect for his crew.

Plus, he's invincible. That changes a lot.

Romulan Warbird? Beam him over, he'll handle all of them with his bare hands.
Borg cube? No problem for Captain Pike, he'll assimilate back each and every drone there is.

I don't know about you but if I had a premonition that I would wind up spending the rest of my days in a wheelchair with my flesh melted off of my body I would be a little, how do you say, "concerned".
