lol @ Dash. I'm sorry you don't like Bill Maher, but honestly (love him or hate him) it is apples and oranges. You know how dirt cheap that show is probably to produce for HBO? I'd wager, aside from any salary Bill gets, a single *episode* of "Boardwalk Empire" can probably cover an entire season of "Real Time" in respect to the writers, set rental, equipment, etc. Plus, he is so controversial, I bet they love all the attention he brings (the "Howard Stern" effect, imo).
I agree though a lot of good HBO shows were cancelled before their time (ROME, Carnival, Deadwood) but HBO usually gives shows a fair shake (at least more so than the other networks, especially non-premium). It comes down to ratings and even more importantly, money. While they were amazing shows, "Deadwood" and "ROME" were some of (if not *the*) most expensive shows ever financed/produced by HBO. I think something like "The Sopranos" lasted as long as it did is that it had such a massive following, there is no way they could have ever cancelled it early. People love mob stories for some reason, lol.
Unfortunately, critical acclaim & quality are not always enough to keep a show going, even on a network as friendly as HBO. I will miss "Hung" but it was really grasping at straws, still, after 3 seasons. HBO gave it more than enough time in my opinion. I only wish they would have concluded it properly, that's all.
