The Gay / Pedo Jokes Are A Bit Surprising For A Relatively Recent Show

It's a bit weird watching this through today's more enlightened lens and seeing the very clear anti Gay / Gay = Pedo Jokes that are freely made.

Sure we can see that they're just young guys not explicitly being full on homophobic when they round on Neil for his dad being "gay", more just mickey taking (although I think even that would be viewed as unacceptable these days).

However there's also a strange bit where Neil's dad is pulled up at the thought of young boys, "all wet and naked" when no-one mentioned them being naked. It's a weird implication that because he's gay, he'd be interested in naked young guys. Surely that wouldn't have been viewed as particularly acceptable even when this was made?

There was no problem AT ALL when this was made! 😂 It's a programme about teenage lads, showing exactly how plenty of teenage lads think, behave, and speak (yes... EVEN NOW! Shock, horror, etc 😂)! And it's still one of the funniest shows ever made!

Well as I was saying above re them being young guys, yeah I'd agree there isn't really a problem re the "lads" behaviour.

The issue is more with the writers themselves. As I said, maybe they'd get a pass on making jokes purely on the basis that it would "funny" to accuse someone of being gay at that time but the example scene I gave didn't feature the kids at all.

It was just Will's mum and Neil's dad with Mr Gilbert as far as I recall. And the joke is that because he is reputedly gay, he'd be imagining young under age boys as naked.

Yes, and it's funny. A helluva lot of people found it funny then, a helluva lot of people find it funny now. The Inbetweeners is a hugely popular show.

Yeah sure it's a funny show.

But I really don't see where the joke is in saying that just because someone is gay they'd also be fantasizing about naked underage kids...

Each to their own though I guess 👍
