Bouncing off the atmosphere?
In the first scene when he's flying what I think was the X-15 he is warned about bouncing off the atmosphere over the radio.
Surely that only happens when craft are travelling at orbital speeds and above?
The X-15 has a wing that generates lift in the upper atmosphere. If not flown properly, it will skip off of the atmosphere a bit until it slows down.
