Is Doctor Strange really ripping off Inception?

Inception itself is a rip off of an anime called Paprika there are 5 minute long scenes that Nolan copied from the anime especially the hallway fight scene. The story character designs, theme and more were all copied from the anime.

Second Doctor Strange has had the visuals of cities flipping onto each other and within in each other in the comics since the 60s.

Third Batman Begins is based of an old Doctor Strange script

Here is what the writer of Doctor Strange said:

The writer also seems to get a kick out of the comparisons to Christopher Nolan's work in BATMAN BEGINS and INCEPTION. "We are tackling the origin story, because the origin story is so awesome that Christopher Nolan ripped half of it off for Batman Begins." - See more at

David Goyer who wrote Batman Begins previously wrote a Doctor Strange screenplay a few years before landing Batman Begins and he obviously copied Doctor Stranges script.

Its hilarious that people say Strange is copying anything.

There is visual similarity in some scenes featured in the trailers, but overall the entire movie (both story and visuals) should be very different. It's just an issue now, because those few trailer scenes are all we've seen.

Rip-off or not, it shouldn't get nominated for best visual effects at the Oscars. Since it's already been done before cinematically.

Have you seen the entire movie already?

I say the same thing when people say they want Doctor Strange to be nominated for an Oscar.

Those are really false equivalents, though. If someone says they want a film to get a nomination, that means just that, that they want it to get a nomination. They are indicating a preference, a hope, a desire. They could have a preference without having seen the film, for whatever reason.

But someone saying that a film shouldn't " get nominated for best visual effects at the Oscars... since it's already been done before cinematically.", that is making a value judgement of how good a film is, and making assumptions that all the visual effects throughout the entire movie have all been done before. And there is no way of knowing whether or not all the visual effects are repeats of effects from prior movies without having seen the film.

Personally at this point I don't know whether or not Doctor Strange should be nominated for any Oscars because I haven't seen the film yet. Maybe it will be good enough, with fantastic visual effects that would warrant a nom or three. And maybe the film just won't come together, or the effects will be lacking. Or maybe it will be something in between, with effects that serve the story well and help the film be very entertaining, but not award-worthy. And we can all have our own guesses and opinions about which will be the case, and we can make educated guesses based on the trailers we've seen or what we know about the studio or the filmmakers, but none of us will really know for sure unless we've actually seen the film.

I guess the Jungle Book shouldn't get nominated either since we've seen CGI-animals before too 

Having seen the 15-minute footage preview, I can assure you that this has not been done before, cinematically.

Did the CGI look finished?

Were there particular shots that you didn't like?

CGI definitely looked finished.

I can't think of any shots I didn't like.

An old post, but...
Why do you think that Oscars are not given for things that have been done before? An Oscar is for excellence in the given field. If a thousand movies do the same thing, this year or previously, and "this" movie (for some value of this) has done it better than any movie this year (for the current movie year) then it deserves to be nominated. Whether it deserves to win depends on the other nominees, of course.

reply

Yup. It's like when some people thought David Bowie was a huge Nirvana fan when making a version of Man Who Sold The World.

Just because a person hears/sees one version before the other doesn't mean one is a ripoff.

Heck, at least wait until you've seen the film before claiming it's a ripoff. Even if Doctor Strange wasn't doing flipped over cities in the 60s maybe this film will do things that Inception didn't. Maybe the training sequence in this film will be vastly different from Batman Begins (which was based on old Batman comics and old Doctor Strange comics).

No DCEU fans would dare to reply to this thread

I mean, before saying Dr Strange Ripping off Inception or Batman Begin

First, Proof that Inception didn't rip off
Paprika (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0851578/)
or Dreamscape(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087175/?ref_=rvi_tt)

And Second, Proof that Batman Begin origin story didn't rip off Dr Strange origin story

So....Yeah....Um....Pineapple!

It is good that Gabriel is at least acknowledging he is a hater, though.

I forgot the part in Inception where he created orbs with his hands to fight with. Or when he created a whip. Or when his cape took down a bad guy. Or when... you get the idea.
