David Morrell, the writer of the novel FIRST BLOOD, hates Last Blood. (See link)

They've messed up Morrell's original concept and character the second they made the first sequel. At least Morrell got to make money off the novelizations.
shareI wonder if he owns the character and gets payment for each outing? Howsoever, I didn't see this movie and have not read the book but they took Rambo in a totally different direction in the second film and I'm wondering if it's a bit late to start complaining now.
shareApparently First Blood was quite a departure from the book. In the book he slaughters hundreds of people , in the movie he keeps a lid on it and gets the sympathy vote.
shareThat's interesting. I'd just assumed the book would be more introspective treatment of a damaged veteran and Hollywood had taken it in an enjoyable but dumbed down direction - certainly in the later films. But it sounds like a hefty dollop of pulp violence to begin with – I should look it up I guess.
shareI would have thought the same also.
Might sound like the movie is better than the book. Jaws movie was better than the book also.
Yeah, in Morrell's book, he's a homicidal maniac with no redeeming qualities. There is no sympathetic character to throw your lot in with. Teasle's a jealous ass (he's a Korean vet, who got no attention whatsoever, unlike the Vietnam vets). Trautman has come there explicitly to kill Rambo. I think Rambo even kills a kid at one point. This is Morrell's creation, "Rambo" (no first name).
"John Rambo" is wholly the creation of Sylvester Stallone, who came in and said "What if we had Rambo constantly teetering on the brink, but at the last minute, he always comes back down on the side of sanity?" And it worked amazingly well. "First Blood" the movie is the more "introspective treatment of a damaged veteran"... because Stallone's a better writer than Morrell is.
