Things that Didn't Make Sense/Questions

1. Why didn't the SWAT team find DeGroat when they bust open his meth lab? (Was he somehow able to elude the authorities?)

2. There is a crucial phone call in the movie used as evidence for the killings, which I didn't understand. It seems Petty (Dafoe's character) was able to make a call to Dan (the bartender) as the bad guys show up, but wherein lies the evidence of what took place?

3. It seemed contrived that the first house Russell and his uncle encounter in trying to find Rodney turned out to be Harlan’s.

1. the SWAT team and degroat were at different locations, but the way it was filmed led you to believe they were at the same location. common film trick

2. dafoe's character accidentally called dan just before they arrived at degroat's roadblock. the call managed to record degroat, petty and affleck's character (screaming).

woody harrelson's character yelled to "get that other one out". i'm guessing dan/local cops recognized woody's voice, then inferred the "other one" was affleck's character, because everyone knew he was indebted to petty and they were most likely together

3. maybe, but i imagine he's the top drug dealer in the hills, and the only one with a large headquarters, so it's not that strange

the only thing i found contrived was the roadblock scene. petty accidentally dials dan right before he gets shot, then instead of killing affleck's character in the car too, harrelson's character yells to "get that other one out"

1. The two scenes were time-jumped. The SWAT guys were too late. The two scenes happened at different times. deGroot (Dutch for "the big [man]" shot up before the cops got there. The undercover cop in the baseball cap says "He was tipped off."

2. It wasn't a phone call. Petty knew he'd have trouble, maybe be killed, due to the number of guys blocking him. They showed him turning on the "record" function of the phone. You can see a figure of a cassette running on the display both when he records and when the Chief plays it back in Petty's office.

3. They got the address from Petty's ledger.
