Keira knightleys American accent

I wonder what did people think of Keira knightleys American accent for Caroline.

She sounded American

reply

I don't understand why she had to be American.

reply

Cathy was American in the books, but I guess they could have just her British for the movie.

reply

That was a pretty convincing American accent, given her very clipped British dialect.

Yes, I caught myself thinking, "I thought she has a British accent." Branagh's Russian accent wasn't bad either

reply

Very good overall. There were one or two instances where I thought I caught a trace of her native accent, but all in all she did a great job.

reply

Her accent was good, but then again, I wouldn't hate if they made her British for the movie sake.

reply

It seemed a bit forced, she must have been going for a more specific american accent than the one she used in Last Night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89AsctCHnVg

That was a seamless american accent. (Unless she's using a british in which case I'm an idiot)

reply

Cathy, and I thought it was pretty good.

reply

I thought Cathy was supposed to be British, and that's why Jack is living in London in "Red October". And then she was changed to an American for Ford's installments. Knightley did have a convincing accent, though.

How do you like that piece of satire?

reply

Cathy was American in the novels and in the movie versions.

reply

That was a TERRIBLE American accent, especially considering how easy the generic American accent is. All you need to do is add a bit of twang really. Probably not so easy for a Brit who's been home-schooled on pretending to speak with a mouthful of potatoes.

reply

No, it wasn't a "TERRIBLE" American accent. It was the exact opposite: excellent, realistic, essentially flawless. You have a tin ear.

reply

I thought it was terrible too. As a non-american I will defer to american's who think this utterly fake american accent is utterly convincing.

reply

I'm an American actor. I thought it was only okay. There's no particular reason a British actor should be any better at doing a foreign (to her) accent than I am. We all have training available. At least three or four of her lines had horribly clunky wrong sounds in them. But what non-Americans should know is that our culture is so international and mobile, our population so large, and our geography so vast that a lot of different speech patterns and inflections are possible valid American accents, a lot more than maybe any other English-speaking nation. So we are constantly meeting people who sound like nothing we've ever heard before, which makes us easier to fool, probably.
