Opinions please: What did you think of Princess Diana's wedding dress?

I remember staying up and watching the wedding live.I thought the dress was ugly. I would have loved her in something more form fitting but extremely elegant and regal looking. I also disliked the 3/4 length sleeves on the dress. She was tall like me and had long arms. Then there was a tv special done on the couple who made the dress and all the work they did from start to finish along with their employees to get it done. People all over the world raved about the dress but I will never forget how much I disliked it. Below is a video of the dress being removed from a crate and displayed.

I agree, the dress is quite ugly. I watched the wedding back then and was not really in love with the dress then. And looking at it today it is REALLY ugly. I have never heard of anyone wishing to copy it. It certainly is not a classic look women want to wear no matter the year.

It was very 80's and easily dated.. Kate's dress was beautiful though.

The night is a very dark time for me.

I was just reading about Diana's dress in one of my many books devoted to the Princesss of Wales. Apparently her wedding dress was very similar to a gown worn by one of her ancestors. I forget who the woman was, but her prtrait was hanging in Diana's ancestral home, Althorp. She asked the Emmannuels to create a gown based on that design. It certainly was very old-fashioned and fussy looking.

It was butt ugly but very typical of the time. 80's poof, big hair and big poof everywhere.

She was so lovely that'd have been gorgeous in anything. I didn't mind her dress at all, it was very elegant.

Wow a lot of replies on this. After seeing the very lovely dress Princess Katherine chose I shudder even more when thinking of Princess Diana's dress.

Diana's was a horrible dress. Kate's dress was classy and beautiful....

Yes there were some things (collar, sleeves) on Diana's dress that could have been better BUT after seeing the dress in person at a Diana exhibit, there were so many details to the dress that do not translate in pictures or tv. Like a lot of people I watched the wedding on TV and have seen many pictures, specials, etc... but they do not compare in anyway to seeing the dress in person. The amount of detail on the dress, shoes, train, and veil was amazing.

I personally didn't like the dress. Diana was only twenty years old when she got married. The dress seemed to matronly and stiff for such a young woman.

I wasn't alive yet for the wedding but as far back as I can remember I've always thought that dress was hideous. Princess Grace had the best royal wedding gown of all time in my opinion.

When I think of the classic dresses of Royalty and etc they are form fitting on top and have a ball gown skirt.

Jackie O & Grace Kelley & Queen Elizabeth fit this description.

Princess Anne had a pleasing if not stunnning A-line dress with bell sleeves. There was enough of it following her form that it looks pretty classic now, looking back.

The problem with the Princess of Wales' dress was primarily those ginormous 80's puffy sleeves and that stupid ruffle around the neck. I think she could have gotten by with the big poofy skirt, and looked far more classic, if she'd ditched those sleeves.

I was very interestested int he Pricnesses of Wales, or more accurately, in the Cult of Diana. One of the bridesmaid's dresses sold here in St. Louis at the local auction house which has a specialty in international couture. I took off work that day to go and see that dress! The seller's name was not revealed, but I THINK it was Sarah-Jane Gaselee's dress. It wasn't one of the tiny ones, and it wasn't Sarah Armstrong-Jones' dress, either. The auction house had telephones set up for bidding and someone overseas purchased the dress.

I thought the dress was pretty for back then. Now I think it's way too much. But then again I thought Princess Kate's dress was boring. I expected something completely different.
