Does Ige really return?

Does the woman that take care of the children really return? I think not.

When Uxbal leaves the bathroom she's hanging on the ceiling, which usually means that the person is dead?

reply

It seems the director said she returned.

However her NOT returning would make the movie more consistent. It fits much better with the overall theme.

When I watched this, it was obvious to me that it was him on the ceiling. I just checked again in case I was wrong but I don't see how anyone could think it isn't him. It was to mark that his life was ending.

As for Ige coming back, you have to look at Uxbal's role in the film and his characters arc. The film was about achieving serenity before death in a challenging world and there is nothing to suggest any ambiguity. Admittedly it could have been done better but I had no doubt that she returned at the end.

The anecdote by the corrupt cop about the tiger was simply a counterpoint to Uxbal's journey during the film. The cop wasn't a sympathetic character and part of the beauty of this story is ultimately that despite a hopeless situation in a world filled with flawed and greedy characters, a fundamentally good man found resolution and peace before death. He proved the cop wrong along the way.

If Ige didn't come back, it wouldn't have fitted with the conclusion.

That's how I saw it anyway. Loved the film.

If that is true then the director is only admitting to a pretty poor performance at conveying what he wanted to convey during the important end scenes.

I agree that through his sloppiness he ended up with a much better ending. The ambiguous ending was the best way to close this film.

Why have a happy ending after the gritty hopelessness that went before? Iga may have come back of course but we can't know for sure. If you imagine he received some form of redemption prior to death, then you also got that.

If she didn't return I am killing myself over a movie. LOL

There has to be SOME kind of HOPE at the end of this movie.

The one hanging was the Chinese girl with the baby who used to babysit his children.

reply

I think she returned, if the director said so himself then I accept that as well. Although certainly discussing other possibilities is worthwhile with a movie like this.

It would have been very tragic had she taken off, at the same time I feel a bit like the movie lets Uxbal and the viewers off the hook by having her return. If you're going to have the girl go all the way to the train station with the money after all Uxbal has done, then have Ige take it all the way to the end and have her leave her dying benefactor and his 2 children. Or don't have her go to the station at all. It wasn't necessary to create that extra drama of "will she or won't she?", if she is indeed a decent person. But that's just a minor quibble, I really liked all the characters including Ige.

Who picked up Mateo from school that day then??

BTW both the reflection in the mirror and the ceiling apparition at the end are Uxbal.

reply

Come on guys, it was CLEARLY the gay Chinese guy on the roof at the end.
The director purposefully did this to illustrate that he was murdered for his sexuality. The director himself came out about being gay before the film was released in 2010 and specifically addressed this very scene in an interview. The film tackles the emerging homosexual Chinese diaspora in Barcelona and the dire implications it has on its society.

8 Pages and this hasn't been brought up yet? Were any of us watching the same movie?! Get your facts right guys.

reply

I think you've hit the nail on the head gold_1090.

This film really tackled some poignant issues about Chinese homosexuality in Spain.

reply

People can't differentiate a black woman from a spanish man? It was Uxbal/Javier on the ceiling.

Be it a grain of sand or rock, in water they sink as the same.
