symbolism

hey there any guesses about the Bull Symbol in the Atreides headquater. I know it is mentioned that Pauls great grandfather was a Bull fighter but...what does it mean?
Isnt the Bull the Symbol of the flag of the Harkonnen?

reply

The bullfighter symbolism represents House Atreides drawing out the bull by taking over Arrakis and ultimately getting killed in the process by the Emperor and House Harkonnen. Arrakis is basically the arena in which the bull fight takes place, orchestrated by the Emperor. The Harkonnen symbol seems to be unclear but is noted as being a griffin and/or ram.

House Atreus is supposed to be descended from the ancient Greek leader, Atreus, father of Agamemnon, he of the Trojan war. The bull is probably meant to echo the bull leaping images found at the ancient Greek site on Crete.
