Why does the city Metropolis look so futuristic?

Is this Earth or some alternate universe? Metropolis also look so sparse with minimal inhabitants. Weird artistic choice.

I'd say they were trying to be thrifty. The more detail the more computer time, effort, continuity checking, rendering required (if they still do that type of thing). Cost versus artistic choice. Animation budgets are not growing they are shrinking even though the technology is getting better, quicker and more efficient.

Yeah.. I think they should stop blowing animated movie budget on hiring famous names just for the voices. Like, was Zacchary Quinto (or Alexandra Daddario) really necessary? Didn't add anything to the quality to me. A no name voice actor would suffice. Should have spent some more on background arts.

I guess they tried to make Metropolis kinda unique like Gotham with it's gothic tones, gargoyles and all. It somehow worked for Gotham. But here it's just rather a random futuro-art-deco-ish (?) that's just too clean and sterile. Maybe because it's "tomorrow."

Also, they've shown that people have smartphones but no one is seen recording any events using their phones? Only journalists with their bulky video cameras? Seriously?
