Can I see this without watching the anime?

Yes, you can, but you're gonna miss all the buildup. You don't need to watch Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back to enjoy Return of the Jedi, but it makes it so much better.

I recommend watching the anime first. It's a good one, and it's not that long. The 26 episodes are about 8 hours long in total and they're quite addictive (I've seen them twice). It's like watching 8 episodes of a normal 1-hour per episode show.
