The married couple that played Marbles (Spoilers)

So we see the husband come back after beating his wife in marbles, looking like his soul was shattered, which makes sense. But i instantly thought would you seriously not let your wife win so she could live? What dickhead husband would actually beat his wife and let her be the one to die?

reply

He was probably scared at that moment but started to really think about his guilt later.

reply

We don't really know their back story.
For example, if they have kids, maybe she sacrificed herself, thinking he would have more a chance at winning the prize money. Of course, this is just a theory.

reply

That makes a lot of sense! Maybe she had a fatal disease and they needed the money to cure her, but she figured "he should just keep the money and live a full life. If only one of us can make it, should be the one with the most chance to win".

reply

Then he wouldn't suicide.

If they had the balls to rationalize who should win and live then he wouldn't have any reason to die, but to live ...

reply

Survivors guilt.

No matter how she died, the husband couldnt take the strain on going forward without her.

What really makes all this much worse, is everyone chose to come back knowing they could die. And the Gamemasters purposefully had them play a game where they pick teams knowing they will pick people they cared about most, only to pull the rug from under them and have them fight eachother. They purposefully ensured that partners would inevitably have to fight eachother. Their claim at the beginning that "the prize money will be split evenly among the team members who win the final game". Its BS, they manipulated those people into thinking it could be more than one winner at the end.

I'll need to rewatch the scene where the Detective examines the winners log book. To see if some years displayed more than a single winner.
