The way Dr. Ogden talks

Considering that Julia is an educated woman and a doctor, the only female in her graduating class at medical school...WHY does she talk in that little girl, nasal voice? I haven't seen Hélène Joy in anything else, so this may be her regular way of talking. To me it is very disconcerting for a character to speak/act in a way that defies the character.

Have you ever heard Shirley Henderson's voice? She's 51 years old and has a very high-pitched voice:

She's an Edwardian woman. My grandmother spoke in the same high, well modulated voice. It's only since the 1990's that women have been taught to talk in the lower register.

Unfortunately now it's descended to the sound that is like a woman talking mid-bowel movement. The Kardashians are a prime example, but certainly not alone.

I really don't think much analysis is necessary. She sounds like a perfectly normal female, for Heaven's sake.

i am kind of used to the way that she talks...

there are other actresses that i have to put on mute or not watch at all, becausd of their high pitcvhed voices...

don't get me wrong, there are alot of males that i can't stand their voices either...so

I love the show, and I don't see anything wrong with her voice, either.

There's nothing wrong with a low voice

It's more or less the way Helene Joy talks normally, only she sounds more determined and less breathy. When acting, she expresses emotions by drawing air or exhaling, like nervousness or confusion.

She's Australian so perhaps it sounded more natural back in Australia with her Australian accent.

It must be a North American thing, not liking the way she speaks, because I'm Czech and I think it's perfectly normal. So for me, it doesn't defy the character. Women were supposed to be like this back then, it's one of the few things that tie her to the traditional society.

Helene Joy is playful and a bit girlish (in a good way). I imagine she would fit well into French, Lithuanian or Japanese culture - where women are expected to be cute and girlish and to speak in high-pitched voices.

Also, I have noticed that, when people speak in another language or use another accent, their tone of voice changes a bit. Perhaps there's a bit of that going on too.

I hadn't noticed the voice specifically but I think the character is meant to have a practiced disarming personality. That would be a very useful tool for a professional woman in those times. If you can't beat them, charm them.

reply

I know her voice bothers some but I never noticed anything off putting about it.

reply

Doctor Grace's voice is more inappropriate for the time.

reply

Wait a second, because I'm confused. If you have a certain voice, you aren't educated? I've never heard of that before.

It's a man's life in the British Dental Association.

I think she is disarming -smart, feminine and wise--and never pushy with her voice or actions. What I did notice is how plain they had her at the beginning-and she segued into both an intelligent and beautiful woman.

I agree with all of this. I personally find her to be very captivating.

No blah, blah, blah!

reply

Agreed! i really love the show--and am just waiting for season 10! :)

Helene Joy has a real life strong Australian accent. She's putting on a "period" Canadian accent so it comes across a bit strange at times.

Crabtree's accent is a real Newfoundland accent."Newfies" talks like that. Eh?

The slightly "English" accents of many characters is period correct as most Canadians at that time were immigrants. By WW2 Many Canadian military officers were ridiculed in the UK for putting on "fake upper class English accents or Hollywood** accents" we just naturally talked like that.

** The Hollywood accent is actually a standard Canadian accent. Louis B, Mayer and Mary Pickford picked the "Canadian accent" as the easiest to understand when talking movies came out. Those actors with horrid accents like "Lena Lamont" in Singing In The Rain saw their careers plummet when "Whatz Wonng witt the way I tawks?" made movie viewers cringe and laugh.

Crabtree's Newfie accent really isn't very strong - except in the Republic of Murdoch episode. In that episode, it's actually hard to understand him.

I have seen Dr. Ogden and Murdoch play in a detective show and he played him self and she play some other woman but she talked the same as she did in the mystery shows. I was really surprised to see them. I miss watching them since we can not get that channel and not on Netflex. kaye
