Why was the man from US embassy, who I assume was a CIA officer, trying to kill Beckett? It was not clear. We are lead to believe that the whole conspiracy was about getting rid of Karras as a potential leader of Greece or was it?

I think we're supposed to intuit that he was 'on the take'.
Like the kidnappers would enlist everyone who might ever be involved on the coverup in the future and pay them all off - like all, or a very specific, embassy employee?!
Give me a break.
